“Almost there.”

Finally, she spotted the turnoff. “Go up that road,” she said.

“This looks like private property.”

“It is. But my grandparents have known the owner for decades. We turn here.”

When Harry stopped the car at Cate’s direction, she got out. “Grab the tarp, please. We have to walk this last bit.”

Cate took the water bottles, and they set out on foot, moving quickly.

Harry inhaled. “Ah, the scent of peaches. I should have guessed.”

“The orchard’s rows are lined up in such a way that this hilltop has a perfect view of town and the fireworks. I thought it would be fun to watch from here.”

Harry flipped out the tarp. They smoothed it before sitting down. “Should we expect company?” he asked.

“No. All the owner’s family are grown and gone. I think it will be just you and me.”

“You’re forgiven for keeping secrets,” he said. “This is a nice surprise. All the beauty and none of the crowds.”

“I thought you would like it.”

Harry cupped her face in his hands and kissed her. “The whole day has been great. I should take a vacation more often.”

She put her hands on his wrists. Was she going to stop him, or simply hang on? When Harry deepened the kiss, she knew the answer.

His tongue dueled with hers. Harry eased her onto her back. “I want you, Cate.”

She nodded. “Yes.” At some level, she had known this would be the outcome of seeking out privacy. Yet still she had brought him here.

Harry moved on top of her, settling one large thigh between her legs. They were both fully dressed. His breathing was ragged. She could feel his heart pound against her chest.

“I wish things were different,” he said, leaning on one hand and sliding the other beneath her top to cup her breast.

“Different how?”

“Me. My life. You deserve someone uncomplicated, Cate. Someone who will worship you and make babies with you.”

“I don’t need to be worshipped. And not everyone has children.”

He stared down at her. It was too dark to read the expression in his eyes. But she felt the war inside him. “Enough of that,” he said, the words barely audible. “I haven’t been inside you in months.”

His exaggeration made her smile until he tugged at her nipple and sent liquid fire coursing all the way to her belly and beyond.

“Harry...” She said his name, hearing the yearning, the need in her own voice. In the sky above them, the fireworks started with one perfect starburst of white and crimson. Cate felt compelled to point it out to her partner. “You’re missing it,” she said.

“I’m not missing a damn thing.” He gave one quick look over his shoulder at the whirls of color and immediately went back to his focus onher. “Tell me what you want, Catie-girl.”

I want you.

But she didn’t say that. “I want to see the fireworks. Please.”

He flopped to his back and groaned. “I couldgiveyou fireworks,” he said.

She reached for his hand and linked their fingers. “Relax, Harry. We have time for everything.”
