Archer only hugs me tighter. “You are the bravest person I know, Kat.”

“Just hold me a little longer,” I whisper.

He buries his face in the crook of my neck, and I close my eyes, wondering if the world finally went mad, because Archer Crone is not the Archer Crone I used to know.

Finally, I turn in his arms.

He brings his hands to my face and wipes my tears with his thumbs. I’ve never wanted him to see me cry. But that’s not the first time I’m turning into a puddle in front of him. This should feel embarrassing, but there’s not an ounce of judgment in his eyes.

“You are amazing, you know that?” he says with unusual softness.

God, his beautiful lips just need to be endlessly kissed. Especially when he smiles like this.

I chuckle through tears. “You smile way too often lately, Mr. Chancellor. It’s suspicious.”

He laughs, and I adore his laughter, too. “I like to keep you on your toes, Miss Ortiz. Alright. We need to change your mood. I like your smile too. Wanna do something you’ve never done before?”

His gaze is too playful when he pulls me in for a kiss.

ARCHER

Just when Ithink I know Kat well, she pulls another trick out of her sleeve, another story.

Shit.

My girl is a fucking soldier with a fascinating mind and an amazing attitude.

I kiss her deeply, pressing her as hard to my chest as I can. Physical contact can override the mental process, and here she is, her beautiful eyes smiling as she pulls away.

I want to see her eyes widen in surprise again. I love watching her excitement. It’s contagious. Nothing much has excited me lately, but watching her is like seeing Old Faithful erupt, even though it shoots up in the air every hour of every day.

“Wanna swim naked in the ocean?” she offers.

I grin. “You are a loose cannon, aren’t you?”

Kat is just my type of explosive. She throws her head back, laughing, knowing I’m thinking about it now.

“What do you know about sharks, wild thing?”

Her eyes widen in surprise.

There. I did it again, and I’m so fucking proud of it.

A minute later, she is changing into an orange bikini, and I watch her through the slit of the open door to the bedroom, like a creepy fucking schoolboy. I can’t get enough of her beautiful body.

Another minute later, I hold her by her hand as we hurry, grabbing and kissing, downstairs to the jet ski docked at the yacht. And as I start the engine, she does a war cry as we zoom across the sparkling water toward the south beach and caves.

This little trip is nothing extraordinary, but when we step onto the sandy pebbled beach by the southern caves, the memories of my family vacations softly tiptoe into my mind.

I used to be happy here.

I used to have a family years ago.

I explain to Kat that there’re a lot of sharks in the waters around, tell her they lose teeth.

“You are messing with me right now, right?” She snorts with disbelief.
