“Oh, shit,” Becky murmurs.

We dart to the office and throw the back door open.

“What is—”

Becky’s words cut off abruptly as we spill outside and halt.

The dim back door light casts a glow on Roey and Jace who throw punches at several guys.

I’ve seen people fighting only a few times in my life. Extreme violence makes me nauseous. And this is nothing like the scene by the elevator.

Jace and Roey kick and punch the dark shadows with methodical precision. I think I hear a bone crack.

Four? Five other guys?

I can’t even count, frozen in shock.

“Stop!” Becky shouts, the thudding of the fists against hard bodies resonating with the blood pumping in my head.

But I can’t look away. This is just like the scene from my book when Emily and John were attacked.

I can’t take my eyes off Jace, his kicks and punches, the elegant danger in the way he moves and knocks the guys around.

“Freeze! Or I’ll shoot!” one of the guys barks.

The distinct sound of a trigger being cocked echoes against the buildings.

Jace and Roey freeze in their spots.

My head spins as I see three of the guys back off, spitting and cursing. The other two are trying to get up off the ground.

Another one pulls out a gun.

No-no-no-no-no.

He points it at Jace as he steps closer to him, sniffling, blood running from his smashed nose down his chin.

“Mr. Gordon sends a warning,” he hisses. “Next time, you’ll end up six feet underground.”

My stomach turns at the mention.

“Mr. Gordon?” Becky whispers to me. “Isn’t that your biological dad?”

Yes, and now I know what’s happening.

Just then the guy swings his hand and strikes Jace on the side of the face with his gun, sending him stumbling backward.

“Jace!” I scream, lunging toward him.

“Let’s go!” the guy orders, and the group of them take off running into the darkness of the alley.

I run up to Jace, who touches his face with his fingers, looks at the blood on them, and sends a murderous stare in the direction of the shadows.

Roey spits on the ground, his hands on his hips as he studies Jace.

“Well, that’s a not-so-surprising turn of events,” he says and spits again, a smirk on his lips.

“The safety was off,” Jace says in a gruff voice. “They weren’t fucking around.”
