I hurriedly dress as I dial Roey.
“Jace, buddy, it’s the wrong time to call.”
“Where are you?” I snap and hear a familiar female voice in the background. “Who’s that?”
“That’s B.”
“B as in…”
“Becky.”
“And you are?”
“At her place. Spent the night here. Listen, what’s up?”
“We have a situation, Roey.”
I tell him about Lu and Reznik, then tell him to meet me at our Sheepshead Bay apartment.
Jim brings Pushkin, and in a minute, I sprint downstairs, catch a cab, and call Seth Gordon.
He doesn’t pick up.
I call again.
Then again.
Before he blocks me, I send a text.
Me: Reznik has your daughter. He wants immunity and money.
Gordon calls back right away.
“I swear, Mr. Reed, I will destroy you—”
“Her being taken by Reznik has nothing to do with me.”
I can hear his angry huff. “First you get between my daughter and me, then—”
“To be fair, sir, if you didn’t have a falling out with Reznik, he wouldn’t have stalked your daughter and we would’ve never have run into her. You never let me explain, but the evening we met Lucy, we were shadowing Reznik, who just so happened to have a meeting with her. Odd? Yes. And then he came over to her place when he thought I was out of town. Bad sign? Yes. But we didn’t know she was in any way connected to you. And you have powerful enemies who know you very well, sir. So, tell me, if he hadn’t shown up in her life for years and in the last three months met up with her twice, what does he want?”
Gordon is silent.
“Right.” I know I am. “So, here’s the thing. I love your daughter, and I’m getting her back. What I need from you is to have the money ready.”
“When does he want to meet?”
“Tonight.”
“I’m in Vermont. It’s a little complicated, you see.”
“Complicated?” I snap, shocked at his wording. “Complicated to negotiate with your rival? Or complicated to give up certain things to save your daughter?”
