She finally raises her eyes at me, her cheeks flushed, her pupils dilated, lips swollen from my kisses, hair a blond mess. She’s so sexed up that I can’t hold back laughter at how ridiculously happy I am right now.
“Questions, yes.” She smiles, nudging my nose with hers.
“I want to be your boyfriend. Will you date me?”
“Yes!” she exclaims, making my heart swell, and her arms wrap around my neck. “I mean that’s what we were doing lately, right?”
“I just needed to make it official.”
“And guess what?”
“Guess what?” I cock my head at her.
“You don’t even have to move in. Because we live in the same place.”
Right. I kiss the tip of her nose.
“Next question. Will you go to Thailand with me and Roey?”
“When?”
“Soon.”
She stalls.
My heart stalls.
“What if I can’t go?” She squints at me with a sneaky smile. She’s messing with me, and that’s alright. She can.
“Then I’ll stay.”
“Really?” She’s testing me, and that’s okay too.
“Yeah. Roey will be sending me beautiful pictures from the paradise beaches, but I’ll suck it up and stay in New York because you like it so much. I’ll be wherever you are, Lu.”
She rubs her nose against my cheek like a kitten. “How did I get so lucky?” she whispers.
“I shot you, that’s how.”
She throws her head back in laughter.
“I wanna go,” she says. “But can we decide on the date later? I told Mom and Dad”—she rolls her eyes—“my Dad-Dad in Virginia that I’ll bring you home for the Fourth of July.”
Whoa.
That feeling in my chest? It’s a mix of anticipation and dread, similar to when I was supposed to be taken in by a foster family years ago.
“Sure,” I say.
“Is that okay? They really want to meet you.”
She told them about me, then. “Meeting your parents, huh? That’s quick.”
She laughs. “Yeah. You already met one of them. I have a handful.”
True. Most of us have one father. Some of us have none. The lucky ones have two, occasionally in the same household.
I can’t stop looking at her, wanting to snap pictures of her laughing.
