Lu stops me. “I’ll do it.”

I shake my head, my eyes on him as I gently take her by the shoulder. “Stay here. We’ll be fine.”

“Oh yeah?” Chad makes an ugly face then turns to Lu. “We’ll be fine, sweetheart. See you later.”

He walks out, and I follow, my eyes burning into his back while dozens of eyes are on me.

Here we go again.

You can’t rid this world of scum. But you can learn to stand up to them.

LU

Jace and Chad walk out,and I feel my stomach turn.

Jace has taken a punch…

Freaking Chad!

I knew he was a fake charmer when I met him. Swift and galant. A player but funny and sweet. At first, that is.

Becky profiled him right away and called him a peacock with a rough streak. But I liked the way he poured compliments on me, drove fast on the highways, didn’t give a shit about cops or security at posh places, and double parked, but hardly ever tipped—red flag, as Becky said.

The third time I told him I wasn’t ready for sex, things went sour.

“So, you like being waited on but won’t fuck me?”

I dumped him. Or he dumped me. Doesn’t even matter, because I didn’t want him after that.

He texts now and then. I try not to respond. I assume he found out about the party from someone’s social media post.

Fine, I could handle his company for a minute, but I won’t forgive him for punching Jace.

Jace doesn’t know what he is up against. Jace is too nice, too polite. And I feel so freaking bad about what happened that when the two walk out the door, my heart starts racing in a panic attack.

I bite my lip, trying to hold back tears and anger.

Becky walks up to me. “So much for army training. Your roommate is not good with punches. Go check and make sure Chad doesn’t beat him to a pulp in the hallway.”

Right. I should. God, I wish I’d never had this stupid party.

I dart out of the condo and toward the elevator, approaching the corner when I hear the words.

“I don’t want you to come here or bother Lu anymore.” That’s Jace’s voice.

Oh, God, Jace, you don’t wanna do this with him.

I stop and peek from behind the corner.

They are in the elevator hallway, and Chad takes slow steps toward Jace. There’s an ugly smirk on his face as he cracks his fingers.

“Oh, I see, roomie,” Chad sneers. “You still trying to tell me what to do, huh? You have a thing for our Lu?”

Our Lu.Asshole.

“She was never yours and never will be,” Jace says coldly.
