What’s in that fucking bag?

“Gotta run,” he says, and in a moment, he’s out the door, leaving me with a reeling mind and Lu with a disappointed look on her face.

“That’s the guy you talked to on the street the night we met,” I tell her.

“Uncle Tolia, yeah.”

“What did he want?”

There are tea cups on the coffee table and plates with pastries.

“He stopped by unannounced. Strange, really. I was going—”

“I need to grab something from the convenience store,” I cut her off. “I’ll be right back.”

In a flash of a second, I’m out and slam the door of the emergency exit, trotting down the stairs and dialing Roey.

“Reznik is in Goldsling Towers. Leaving right now. Get the surveillance crew on the condo cameras and every intersection in Dumbo.”

“Follow him!” Roey snaps.

“I’m running downstairs as we speak, but he knows my face and that I’m Lu’s roommate. I don’t have my gun on me.”

“Don’t fucking lose him! I’m on it!”

He hangs up as I reach the third floor when the exit door suddenly swings open, slamming into me and knocking me down.

I roll onto the floor.

“Mister Reed, isn’t it?” the familiar voice rasps.

I’m about to kick back at Reznik’s shadow looming over me when something heavy collides with my head, and I sink into darkness.

I’m not sure how long I’ve been out when the ringing of the phone brings me back.

My head throbs and spins when I start rising from the floor, and I grunt, pressing at the wound. My fingers get slippery with blood.

Fuck.

I pick up Roey’s call.

“We didn’t catch him, Jace. He never left the building. The guys are on it. You alright?”

I grunt, getting up. “He knocked me out.”

“Jace, what’s happening?”

I shake my head, fighting the dizziness. “He knew I would follow him. And he knew my last name. I don’t think Lu told him, so—”

“He knows we are trying to trace him.”

“Yea. Fuck…” I check the time of the last phone call—I’ve only been out for five minutes.

“It’s alright,” Roey says with disappointment. “Shit. We’ll study the footage again, but chances are, he changed clothes and went out the back entrance of the Towers. The motherfucker is too clever. Are you sure you’re okay? He didn’t try anything…”

“I’m fine.”

Back at the condo, Lu meets me with a worried expression. “What happened, Jace?”
