“Good question, but it’s best to avoid yes/no questions. Maybe you could rephrase it?”

“Hmm, okay. What about this: what are my real feelings about being the President of the Drifters?”

“Perfect. This way there’s plenty of room for us to feel out the answer together.”

“Yeah, I got the sense that it wasn’t gonna be as simple as yes or no.”

“I’d like you to focus on the question at as deep a level as you can. Think it through. It’s not just about the idea of leading the club. It’s about so much more than that. It’s about who you are, right?”

“Right. Fine. I’ll do my best to think about it.” He did seem to be thinking. Concentrating. She could feel a shift in the energy of the room. Like a connection was forming between her and Rainer. Something deep. Something real.

“We’re gonna do a past, present, future reading. Ready?”

“Ready,” he breathed back, gave her a look so intense it made her pussy do a backflip.

As she turned over the first card, she could feel the tension building. Rainer, too, looked as though he could feel it.

Card one. The past. The King of Swords.

Rainer reacted with interest. “What does that mean? I’m gonna fight someone?”

“By themselves, the cards don’t mean anything. It’s about how they relate to each other. This — the past — could imply Marcus. He could be the King of Swords. The card often depicts a harsh but fair commander. Someone decisive.”

“That sounds like Marcus. His word was law.”

“Marcus did a fantastic job leading the Drifters, all the way ’til the end.”

“Right.”

Card two. The present. The Five of Pentacles.

“This card is to do with paranoia. About a lack of trust.”

Rainer was suddenly extremely focused. “Trust?”

“Do you struggle with trust, Rainer?”

He didn’t answer, but he looked extremely disturbed.

“There’s something about anger, too. Sometimes, the King of Swords can be overly authoritarian. Maybe that card doesn’t refer to Marcus. Someone else in your past? Someone stopping you from feeling trust? Does that sound right?”

Rainer’s face paled. He looked white as a sheet. “How the hell do you know that?” Esme was surprised by how angry he sounded.

“I don’t,” she said, backtracking. “It’s just the card.”

“Finish the damn reading,” he grunted.

She wasn’t scared, exactly, but she felt suddenly very uncomfortable. As she reached for the final card, she wondered if she’d made a terrible mistake doing this with Rainer.

Card three. The future: The Nine of Pentacles.

Damn. It had to be that card. She already knew that Rainer wasn’t going to like this.

“You have to deal with your trust issues. The only way to get to a positive outcome is by confronting whatever happened to you and moving forward.”

Rainer didn’t reply.

“Someone hurt you, didn’t they?” Esme reached out to him, but when she touched his hand, he flinched.
