“You c-can’t keep me here.”

Then, before he waited for Rainer to reply, Shit-stain bolted for the door. But Rainer was quicker. As the guy shot past him, Rainer turned, grabbed at his arm, and gripped his wrist tight.

“Let me go.”

“No can do.”

Esme sniffed. “Just let him go, Rainer. He’s not worth your trouble.”

“Sorry, darling,” Rainer said, “Not happening.” Then, while he held onto the guy’s arm, he pulled out his phone and dialed 911.

The cops, sadly, were useless. They took the guy away but told Rainer and Esme that there was little that they could do in this instance. There was no evidence that the guy had broken in, and — because Rainer had removed Esme’s handcuff with a screwdriver — no evidence that he’d tried to hold her against her will.

The biggest insult had come when the lead cop — a thick-set guy with a terrible handlebar mustache — had asked him about his MC.

“You a one-percenter? Should I be running your name through the computer?”

Rainer did not want his criminal record to be under consideration.

“With respect, sir, I decline to answer that question.”

Esme had looked a little confused. Still, better that she was confused than she found out that he’d done time in prison for fucking drug dealing.

It was a bust, overall, but Rainer hoped that he’d put the fear of God into the little shit-stain. He had to be less likely to do something like this again, and that was the main thing.

After the cops were gone, Esme was still, understandably, freaking out.

“You gonna tell me what that was all about, sweetheart?”

“Maybe. You gonna tell me why you called the cops when I asked you to let him go?”

“Gladly.” Rainer rubbed his forehead. “Shall we head somewhere else though? No offense, but this place is a damn pigsty.”

“It’s homely.”

“Homely to pigs.”

Esme, luckily, smiled at this. “Fine. Let’s go somewhere.”

At a bar round the corner, the two of them sat at a table as electronic dance music thrummed in the background.

“He was a fan of yours?”

“I guess.”

Rainer had a sudden thought. “So, the streaming you do, is it like… Onlyfans? No judgment from me, you understand.”

“It’s not like that. Although I’ve thought about doing that. It’s just tarot reading.”

“Right. You said that you used to do that at a store.”

“Yeah, and now I do it online.”

Rainer sighed. “I owe you an apology. No. Fuck. I owe you two apologies.”

“You cuss a lot.”
