Chuck’s eyes narrowed. “You sure that there was no reason? It’s good to think about why we do the things we do, don’t you agree?”

Millie thought for a moment. “Yep. It’s good to think about.” Could she do it, could she bring herself to be completely honest with him?

“There will be no judgment,” Chuck said. “No secrets. No judgment. Whatever it is, we can deal with it. I promise.”

“I was late because I was scared.” The words came straight out.

“I understand.”

“I just… we used to know each other. And…” Millie would never, ever be able to be this honest with anyone. Not even her closest friend, Zara. “The truth is I always looked up to you. I was scared because I didn’t want you to see what a waste of space I am these days.”

Chuck’s expression softened. “Sweetheart, you ain’t a waste of space.”

“I broke another rule.” Millie fiddled with her fingers.

“You did, but I’m going to let it go because you were explaining your actions. You’ll never get punished further for explaining why you broke the rules.”

“Thank you.” With every sentence, Millie felt more emboldened toward honesty. “I didn’t want you to know how scared I am of horses. I haven’t ridden in a long time. I know it sounds dumb, but I had to convince myself that I was going to be alright. That’s why I was late. I was standing in front of my mirror telling myself, over and over again, that everything was going to be alright.”

Chuck gently stroked the back of Millie’s palm. “I understand, sweetheart. What about when you arrived at the stables?”

“I wanted to show you that I wasn’t useless,” she said. “So I disobeyed you.”

“You sure did,” Chuck smiled at the memory.

“I got all wet because I fiddled with the tap.”

“It’s not bad to want to do a good job. It’s not even bad to want to do a quick job. But if Daddy tells you specifically not to mess about with something, what does that mean?”

She rolled her eyes just a little. “It means don’t mess about with it.”

“And without the attitude?” he asked, a touch more sternly.

“It means don’t mess about with it,” she said, much more sincerely.

“Good girl.”

To her surprise, when he said those words, a tremble of excitement shot up and down her spine. Wow. Never had two words caused such a reaction in Millie. Ever. She wanted to hear that again. Many, many times.

“And what about after that?”

“Was it naughty of me to pull down my… pants?”

Chuck shook his head. “Nope. You felt secure, and you thought you were doing the right thing. It wasn’t naughty at all. My response was very poorly judged.”

“It was?”

“Mhmm. Even if I wasn’t ready to spank you on your…” he shifted almost imperceptibly in his seat, “bare backside, I should have dealt with it better.”

Instantly, she had a premonition — his strong, wide-fingered palm, striking her peachy skin, causing pain and lust to spread around her body. It was such a visceral thought she almost gasped.

“Well,” Millie said, trying to continue without giving anything away, “that night I drank alcohol. A lot of it.”

“You did.”

She felt her pulse start to quicken as she continued. “I wanted to blot it out. Make it feel like it never happened.”

“It’s not a good way to deal with things,” he said. “Trust me. I’ve seen it first-hand.”
