Millie’s eyes widened. “You and me?” She felt immense gratitude. Chuck was making himself vulnerable right now, with this admittedly slightly silly plan.

“Yes. To begin with, anyway. We’ll take Ranger. He’s the gentlest out of all of them, and the way he’s been acting around you recently, feels like he prefers you to me.”

Chuck bent down and patted Ranger’s toy on the flank. Millie stepped back a little.

He looked up at her. “He’s safe. I promise.”

She took a deep breath and managed to summon a smile.

“Okay, Daddy.”

Chuck stroked Ranger again. “Want to give it a go, Ranger?”

Ranger looked back at him, as though he understood everything that was going on. Millie noticed that his toy seemed to have something of a smile on its face, as well.

Millie gathered her nerve and approached Ranger’s toy. She reached out and stroked him again. In that moment, it felt so real, she thought.

A second later, Ranger was between her legs. She breathed in deeply, imagining how it would be to be on the actual horse. She tried to think about how exciting it would be, rather than how little she deserved it. To her amazement, it worked.

“I think I can do it myself, Daddy,” she said, voice trembling.

“Go on then. And remember, you deserve to have fun. You deserve to be silly. You’re a good, good girl.”

She smiled, stepped forward, and felt the world move with her.

As the minutes passed, Millie started to let go of all her doubts and inhibitions. She felt something she hadn’t felt in a long time: pure joy. Her laughter echoed through the trees as she bounced up and down on Ranger’s toy horse, pretending that it was real. It was stupid, but somehow this was reminding her of her first-ever ride on a real horse—the impossible excitement of it all.

She started to move faster, hearing the bells on the horse’s muzzle jangle louder and louder as she started to run as fast as her legs would carry her. But then, just as she felt as though she was about to take off and soar up to the clouds, the stick got caught between her legs. She didn’t quite know how she did it, but she ended up on the floor of the corral, with Ranger’s toy flung halfway across the open space.

Without even thinking, she blurted out, “Stupid little girl! Why do you always have to take everything too far?”

Chuck was by her side in a moment, making sure she was okay. But as soon as it was clear that she hadn’t hurt herself, his demeanor changed.

“Now, darling, what did I tell you about criticizing yourself?” he said sternly, his eyes blazing. “No matter what happens, don’t let your inner critic take the reins.”

“I’m sorry, Daddy.”

“Sorry’s not going to cut it,” he said, shaking his head. “It’s not even going to come close.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Chuckhadn’tknownthatDuke was such a craftsman. As he gazed at the paddles his brother had gifted the two of them, he marveled at the clear skill that had gone into their creation. They were the perfect combination of pleasure and pain. The smooth wood, which Duke had carefully sanded and stained, was glossy and inviting. The leather straps were supple and soft, and the small silver rivets that secured the handles to the paddles winked in the light. It was obvious that Duke had put a great deal of thought and care into making them, and Chuck was hugely grateful.

In truth, he hadn’t thought that he’d be using the paddles on Millie so soon. He hoped that she was ready for them.

He kept his demeanor stern as he lifted the paddles and showed them to Millie. She blushed and looked away, embarrassed but obviously intrigued. Chuck could feel the heat between them, and he couldn’t help but wonder if this would be the night that he finally allowed himself to take her completely.

“You understand why this has to be done, don’t you, Millie?”

“I broke your rule.”

“The most important rule,” Chuck replied. “Every time you put yourself down, your reinforcing bad habits. Bad ways of thinking. It might not seem like much, but trust me, it’s very, very important.”

“I understand, Daddy.”

She looked so beautiful. Chuck had taken Millie back into the Quiet cabin, and had ordered her to take her clothes off, and put her hands up against the wall, bending over so that her butt was presented to him. He couldn’t help but keep glancing down at the cleft between her legs, at the little wet jewel that nestled there.

“You’re not a bad girl. This isn’t about punishment. It’s about changing your behavior. And you never know, you might just enjoy this.”
