“Now’s the time to seal your ears, Duke,” Chuck said, trying hard to keep a smile off his face. “Don’t want to hear something that will haunt you for the rest of your days.”

Trent didn’t say a word, but instead, pointed at “Medical Play” on the page, before underlining it. Patti’s heart raced even faster. He was into the idea of medical play, too? She would never have guessed. Thank goodness she’d been brave enough to tell him about her kink.

“You know,” said Trent, his voice as smooth as butter, “I think we’re about finished.” He flicked through the document, checking and double-checking the details. “Are you ready to sign, babygirl?”

This was it. Was she brave enough to go through with this?

“I’m ready,” she nodded, wringing her hands together.

Time seemed to slow. The world became saturated with color. As the two of them picked up their pens, Patti felt her consciousness expand, and the day start to open up. Patti moved the pen towards the dotted line, but just as she was about to, something caught her eye, across the pond.

A deer, golden brown and elegant. The delicate creature emerged from the trees, before leaning down to the water to drink. Trent followed her eyes and gasped with surprise as they saw another creature step out of the undergrowth. It was a stag; strong and tall and crowned with a tangle of antlers. He was there to protect the deer, to guard his charge.

“Well, if that’s not a sign that we’re doing the right thing, what is?” Trent whispered.

They breathed together, watching the deer and the stag, and then they signed.

The world shifted. Life was about to change forever.

But Patti could have no idea of the journey that she was about to embark on.

CHAPTER TEN

Evenwiththechaosthat the cryptosporidium outbreak had brought with it, Patti found that adapting to her new lifestyle as Trent’s Little was easier than she had expected. In fact, it felt as natural as breathing.

Over the next few days, Trent and Patti spent a good deal of time together. They worked in the quarantine barn, making sure that symptomatic animals were as comfortable as they could be. From time to time, they were called out to one of the pastures to check on an animal which one of the other staff members was concerned about.

Patti felt amazing to be a real part of a team. That was, in fact, the first thing she shared with Trent in their reflection time.

“You enjoying working with others?” Trent asked, as the two of them relaxed together in Patti’s room.

“Mmhmm. That’s what I liked the most about working at Alpha. A lot of hedge funds are kind of… lonely. People working by themselves on their own portfolios of clients.”

“That does sound lonely.”

“Yeah. Well at Alpha, it wasn’t like that. We shared everything.”

Which is why my mistake cost everyone so much money.

Sensing her sadness, Trent gently rubbed her shoulder. “I’ve always liked working alone.”

“Really?”

“Yep. Guess I’m a bit of a control freak.”

Patti put her finger to her lips and looked up innocently. “That doesn’t sound like you, Daddy.”

Trent chuckled. She loved getting to know his softer, more playful side. It was such a pleasure to hear him laugh, to see that hard face transformed by a smile.

It wasn’t just Trent that Patti was learning about. She was thrown into the world of veterinary medicine at the deep end. Luckily, her Daddy was an excellent teacher, and she was an eager student. Before too long, she felt confident in her duties. The work wasn’t glamorous — one of Patti’s main tasks was collecting samples from animals with suspected infections — but it felt fantastic to know that she was making a difference.

Her days were full, but because she had a meeting with her Daddy at the start of each one, she never forgot to take care of herself, as well as the animals.

“Maybe I should skip my cardio workout today,” she’d said one morning, “so that I can concentrate on disinfecting the goat enclosure at the petting zoo?”

“Babygirl, there’s no way that I’m going to let you neglect self-care, even with the best of intentions.”

“Okay, Daddy,” Patti had agreed. “If I work hard, I think that I can do the enclosure, and still make it to a lunchtime workout.”
