I flick through the pages, wondering if it’s a late night snack bell, since we’ve already had dinner delivered to our rooms. It was there, sitting on my desk, after I got out of the shower.

But then I find it.

It’s in the procedural instructions for the Selection.

“Those who will be going home the morning after a trial’s completion will be visited by a representative of the Mating Trials after the tolling of the selection bell,” I read aloud, my grip tightening on the page.

Traditionally, the most Omegas to be sent home from the Trials on a single day are dismissed after the Scenting Ceremony. According to my research, it’s not uncommon for up to half of the Omegas to fall out after it.

My mood sinks like a stone when I hear the knocks begin down the hallway.

Knock. The creak of a door opening. Then a door closing.

Knock. Door open. Sob.

Knock. Door open. Protesting from a male Omega and a door slam.

The knocks come closer as the representative makes their way closer to my door.

“Shit!”

I remember I’m ass naked and run to grab the fluffy robe I saw in the bathroom just as a knock sounds so close I think it might be my own door until the door to the room next to mine swings open and I listen, ear and palms pressed to the wooden pane as the representative tells the Omega in the neighboring room that she should pack her belongings and a car will take her home tomorrow.

My mouth goes dry as the door closes.

I step back from my door, holding my breath.

Although the footsteps stop right outside my door, there is no knock.

Hang on, there was no knock.

A knock sounds on a door maybe a few rooms down from my own.

It’s a mistake.

It has to be.

But I wait and…they don’t come back. I wait until there are no more knocks. And then I wait some more.

Somehow, I’m moving on to the second round. What the fuck?

An expected bolt of excitement shoots through me, and I grab a pillow to muffle my squeals.

“Well,”my mother prompts with a gentle smile. “What did you think? Did any of the Omegas stand out to you during the ceremony last night?”

I consider her question before I shrug. “A few. One in particular, but it’s not my decision to make alone.”

She chuckles as she pops a bite of fresh fruit into her mouth, chewing it slowly as she regards me. Once she’s swallowed, she takes a sip of her sparkling water and licks her lips. “With breakfasts like this, it’s a wonder you’re not all as big as houses.”

I smile. “Wolf has found a way around it. He makes us work out at least two hours every day, and then he keeps going for God knows how much longer.”

“That boy,” she says fondly with a soft shake of her head. “I don’t suspect you and he will have much trouble deciding which Omega you want. Kaz is the real wild card here.”
