She waves me off, wincing as she pushes herself up into a seat and rubs her lower back.

“Maddie,” I warn. “You really shouldn’t—”

“I’m fine,” she assures me with a pained smile that twists my stomach, and then she lifts her brow pleadingly at me. “Do you think we can walk back?”

I chuff out a laugh, relieved she’s all right.

Iknewwe were pushing the horses too hard. I should have said something earlier. If I had, this never would’ve happened. She could have been seriously hurt.

“You’ll ride with me,” I grind out decisively as I glare at the Sergeant.

He’s calmer now, suddenly back to nipping at the long grass, but his ears are still too flat against his head to trust him with her.

“It wasn’t his fault,” she says when she sees the way I’m glaring at him. After sitting for another moment, she rises with help from me and dusts herself off, seemingly running a quick body check for injuries as she stretches out her arms and cranes her neck.

“It’s me. It was my fault. You warned me not to be scared, but I was. I must’ve put him on edge.”

Although she’s trying to play it off, I shake my head and offer her my hand, gently pulling her in and looking her over for any obvious signs of injury. I pull an errant dried leaf from her hair and the way she looks up at me…

I clear my throat, stepping back. “He’s,uh,been on edge these last couple of days and it has nothing to do with you. Here, let me help you onto my mount. Do you see how flat the Sergeant’s ears are? That means he’s still annoyed.”

She sighs, and I know she’d really rather walk, but she’s being a good sport and lets me help her. Once she’s nicely cradled on the saddle, I lift myself up behind her, tucking her into my chest.

I realize, belatedly, this might not have been such a good idea. With her pressed so tight to my front and her hair right in front of my nose, her scent is much too intoxicating.Much too close. Much too…much.

Logically, I know I need to restrain myself—especially since she could be injured, but my Alpha nature is at war with my logic. As I spur our mount back into action, Sergeant follows like a meek little puppy.

With Maddie practically in my arms, my frustration with Sergeant and the whole damn debacle of the Trials, soon makes way for a much more familiar sensation.

Again, I’m shocked by the intensity of it.

I’m no stranger to lust, but this is next level.

She’s injured. She’s injured. She’s injured.

Regardless of my internal chant, the farther Lady walks us back in utmost silence, the more I find myself in tune with exactly how my body is rubbing against her. The way Lady’s movements roll my hips against her.

My cock grows in the suddenly tight jodhs and my eyes close as I inhale her scent.

I catch myself nuzzling her neck but before I can stop myself or apologize, she arches back into me, and I groan when she lets out a little whine, obviously getting aroused herself.

“This is,uh,” I clear my throat, rolling my hips into her lush ass and letting out another groan. “Should we—”

Maddie moans, and I see her hands, white knuckled with their grip on the saddle horn. Her back arches and my lips part against her neck, the wordsjust one taste, just one taste,a deceptive mantra echoing in my testosterone filled head.

Before I can suggest that we stop and take a little break—either to fuck or to stop myself from wanting her so damned badly, a shrike calls and the moment is broken. Remembering myself and that I need to be proper, I lift my head, holding my breath. Holding out for fresh, un-Maddie-tainted air.

She must sense the shift because she lets out a little sound of surprise, and her body goes rigid in front of mine. I grind my teeth, still struggling not to spur Lady out to the forest and take this Omega for myself.

I agreed,I remind myself. Kaz made dead certain to dash my dreams of Omega orgies in the dormitories just this morning.

Be a fucking gentleman, Wolf,he’d pleaded.For once.

“I apologize for that,” I force past my clenched teeth.

“For what?” she asks, her voice husky, and I know she’s wondering if I’m apologizing for my own behavior now or the horses.

Both, I decide. “This was not how I planned the afternoon to go.”
