Wolf has reminded me of sunshine since almost the first time I met him, and it’s like he’s letting me bask in him now. And for the next couple of days, they don’t stop. They tend to my every need, reading me so well toward the end that I don’t have to say anything before they’re there, making sure I’m looked after between brief bouts of snacking on the jars of peaches and pickles left in the canning shed, napping, and a lot of laughter.
The rug in front of the fireplace remains littered with our clothes that we took off that first night and haven’t bothered putting back on again. There are also all the blankets we’ve used and the towels, and as I snuggle into Tai, it occurs to me that this is the best nest ever.
The thought brings a smile to my face as I drift off to sleep, wondering if somehow, I can convince them to stay here with me forever.

T A I
Late afternoonlight warms the lounge as Maddie and I lie together in our nest, panting and beyond sated. For now.
Wolf’s back slams into the rug beside me as he collapses after taking Kaz hard and fast, and Kaz groans as he rolls over to press himself to my other side. We’re all quiet for a while, but Maddie breaks the silence as she suddenly sits straight up.
“I still don’t know how this happened,” she says, frowning before she rests her face in her hands and sighs. “Why did I go into heat? I’ve been taking one and a half doses of my suppressants since the first week of the Trials, and I doubled it this last week or so. It doesn’t make any sense.”
I reach up to rub her back, but we’ve all been wondering the same thing. Since the intensity of her heat seems to be subsiding, we may actually be able to get to the bottom of it now. “Can I see your pills?”
She nods. “Sure, but why?”
