“I’d be happy if you brought anyone home and stopped acting like a twenty-year-old,” she said with a shake of my head.

“About that...” I said, trying not to laugh.

She turned around. “What did you do?”

“I brought him home.” I grinned.

“Are you hiding someone in the basement?” she said sarcastically.

“Nope.”

“A hotel, then?” She pointed her wooden spoon at me. “Stop messing with me. Where is he?”

“He’s in your house.” It was nearly impossible to hold back my laugh.

Ma was smart as a whip, but clearly, if Levi and Ma were any indication, it never occurred to anyone that Aspen and I could end up together.

“Are you serious? You and Aspen?”

“I am.” I held my breath, half expecting her to throw the spoon at me.

She shuffled past, going to the dining room.

“What the fuck?” I muttered as I followed to find her hugging Aspen.

“You’re finallymyson,” Ma said as she squeezed him.

Aspen met my eyes and shrugged but hugged her back. “I’ve always been your son.”

“But now it’s official since my son got his head out of his ass.”

“How you fucking wound me?” I met Aspen’s eyes, loving the smile he wore. “Can you believe her?”

“No, I agree with her. Took you long enough to get your head out of your ass.” He wore the biggest fucking smirk.

I flipped him off.

“When are you marrying him?” she asked when she detached from Aspen.

“Ma, we just started dating.”

She rolled her eyes and pointed the spoon at me again. “You’ve essentially been together since you were teenagers. All you added was sex.”

Aspen had a hand over his mouth, trying not to die.

“This is just going to be a holiday to gang up on me, isn’t it?”

“Why are we ganging up on you? And how can I get in on it?” Kingsley called from the doorway.

“Fuck all the way off,” I popped my head out of the dining room to gauge how much he heard. “Hi, Lis, nice to see you.”

Lis waved and unbuttoned his coat. “Nice to see you as well.”

“Welcome to Christmas.” I put on a fake smile and returned to probing King. “When did you get here?”

“We just walked in. I don’t think you could hear us knocking.”

Nope, not in the middle of Ma’s scene, we couldn’t. “No, we were in the dining room. Sorry about that.”
