“That’s my good girl.”

The restaurant is elegant, with its dark walnut tables, marble floors, flickering candles, and live piano music. There are waiters carrying appetizers and beverages around on silver platters. The air is fragranced, and the noise level is high, along with my nerves.

Our waiter turns to Lucy.

“I’ll have a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, thank you,” she orders, before returning her attention to the menu.

His gaze meets mine.

“I’ll have a beer, thanks.”

Lucy lifts her head and gawks at me, impressed.

“Certainly, ma’am,” he dully responds. “Would you prefer anything specific?”

“It doesn’t matter.” Hesitating, he appears confused. Fidgeting with the menu, I sigh under my breath. “Corona. Thanks.”

“Of course.”

With that, he scurries away.

To my surprise, Lucy chuckles. “I haven’t had a beer in ages,” she admits. “Jaxon’s father got me hooked on wine.”

I grin. “I think Jaxon is trying to get me hooked on whiskey.”

“I don’t know how anyone can tolerate that God-awful taste.”

“Me, either.”

We laugh.

“You know, Sasha, pardon me for being so frank,” Lucy pauses briefly. “But, I wasn’t sure if this day would ever come.”

Blinking at her, unsure with her statement, I say nothing.

“My only son falling in love. Proposing,” she finishes, and she looks so relieved, so honored. “I’ve been worried about him. We all have. He’s always been quite a loner.”

“Has he?” I ask, interested.

She nods. “Most certainly. And nobody deserves to be alone in this world,” she says. “Especially not my boy. He has a great heart.”

“He does.”

“I can tell you love him.”

My stomach drops, and I can’t find it in me to speak a word.

“The way you look at him,” she continues. “It’s the way your face lights up. There’s a glimmer in your eyes.”

Staring at her silently from across the table, I frown, stunned.

“Really?”

“Yes.” She smiles. “When he had first told me about you, and about the engagement, I’ve never been so pleased. I’m so happy for the two of you, Sasha.”

Playing the part, I fake a smile. “Me, too.”
