“Well, at least we’re on the same page, because I’m not agreeing to be anyone’s pet.”

We say nothing further for the rest of the drive to The Pierre. He parks his car under the large, outdoor roof beside the parking Valet.

“Wait here.”

Jaxon Edwards makes his way to my door, and opens it for me like the perfect gentleman.

“Thank you,” I breathe, flustered.

“Of course, Ms. Pierce.”

Placing my hand on his, his grip is firm. Tight. Struggling to catch my breath, I exit his Ferrari, and he closes the door behind me. I begin to walk toward the sidewalk in a daze, until he jerks me backward, bringing me against his chest.

Our eyes lock.

“Watch your step,” he warns.

Glancing down, I notice the curb I’ve almost tripped over. “Right,” I mutter. “Thanks.”

He smirks.

“Mr. Edwards,” The Valet says, beaming. “How are you this fine evening, Sir?”

“Great, thank you. My bags are in the backseat. I’d like them taken up to my suite.”

“Yes, Mr. Edwards.” He bows in his direction, and I snort under my breath. “Of course.”

Jaxon Edwards pulls out his thick wallet and doesn’t bother hiding the hundred-dollar bills resting inside. The employee becomes ecstatic as he accepts his tip.

Billionaires.

“Thank you. It’s much appreciated,” Mr. Edwards says.

He bows once more.

“What are you, royalty?”

He ignores me and steps closer, wrapping his arm around my waist. His cologne is strong, heady. Intoxicating.

Once we reach the front desk in the lobby, they continue to treat this man like he’s a King, while I feel like a nobody. It’s drastic how different our lives truly are.

Making our way toward the elevators, I take in our surroundings, stunned with how beautiful this hotel is. The floors are marble, the walls are painted into complex patterns, and the ceiling is higher than imaginable.

The doors open with ading. He tightens his grasp around my waist and we enter the elevator, and a couple almost joins us.

Almost.

“Pardon me,” Jaxon announces, the man’s eyes widening with recognition. “Would you both mind waiting for the next elevator? My date is feeling quite sick. Not knowing if it’s contagious, I think it would be best if you caught the next one.”

“Yes, of course. I apologize greatly for intruding,” he pauses, intimidated, almost. “Jaxon Edwards?”

“Yes.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance,” he says, holding out his hand, and Jaxon accepts. “I am a big admirer. Your generous donation to the Lateheart Organization was truly remarkable.”

Jaxon politely grins. “I believe it was the right thing to do for such an important charity.”

“Oh, it was. Outstanding. I hope you have a great night, Mr. Edwards.”
