“Not at all. I liked it. Just don’t slam into me.”

He tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear. “Never.”

She was still astounded that she could have frank conversations about sex with Cal. She’d never been with a man so open to talking about their lovemaking. “Cal, thank you for an amazing experience. Let me heal up some, and I’ll be a much better partner.”

He kissed her forehead. “You’re just the right kind of partner now because you’re you.” He helped her to sit up. “Come on. Let’s get us some breakfast.”

Chapter Nine

An hour out of El Paso, Cal put in a call to Brett letting him know their ETA, allowing an extra two hours for a stop to buy more clothing, toiletries, and groceries. Brett gave them a location to meet, and he’d take them from there to the house where they’d be staying.

When Cal disconnected, he looked at his phone and grimaced. He had four voicemails from his captain. He listened to them, then sent him a brief text before shutting off the phone:

Keeping off the grid for now. Find that mole.

Cap would be furious, and Cal hated to let him down this way. He and his captain had always had a good working relationship. There would be repercussions to this, no doubt. He’d certainly have a lot of explaining to do. Following orders was paramount in the Rangers, and he was blatantly disregarding his captain’s wishes by ignoring his calls. He might even lose his captain’s trust, and Cal would hate that.

His gut twisted as he thought of the fallout from his current course of action. But in the end, it didn’t matter. What mattered was keeping Vic and himself safe while their organizations investigated the leak. He couldn’t help but feel guilty, though. He’d never willingly disobeyed his commanding officer before, and this was as close as he’d come to it in the civilian world. But if it saved their lives, it would be worth it.

Vic reached for his hand. “You okay? You look tense.”

“Just thinking about the plan. I know we’re doing the right thing, but people aren’t going to be happy with us.”

She sighed. “No, they aren’t. But better in the doghouse than dead.”

“I texted my boss and told him that I was staying off the grid for now. I had four voicemails. Would you like to do the same thing for your ASAC?”

“I probably should. I’ll be quick about it.”

He turned the phone on and handed it to her.

Her fingers flew across the screen, then she gave it back to him. “Done.”

He switched it off again and put it in his pocket. “That’s all we can do for now.”

The address Brett had given them was a corner convenience store. He was waiting for them when they got there.
