It was obviously hard for her to speak.

Cal said, “She was interrogated by the cartel. This is the result.”

The doctor glanced at him. “That right, Vic?”

She nodded. “Kidnapped. I wouldn’t talk.”

“Did you lose consciousness at all?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Okay. Well, Vic, I need to do a CT scan. Your pupils aren’t behaving for me. I think you might have a Grade 2 concussion.” He glanced at Cal, then back at her. “Did you get hit anywhere else?”

“Not this time.”

The doctor’s eyebrows went up. “This has happened before?”

“Less than two weeks ago,” Cal said. “She had a mild concussion that time.”

The doctor frowned again and gently felt all around her head. Then he said, “You lie still, Vic. They’ll be in shortly to take you for that scan.”

She closed her eyes, and a nurse came in and started an IV. Vic’s blood pressure cuff inflated, and she moaned quietly.

Cal gritted his teeth. The thing must be hurting her shoulder as it raised her arm from her side. Was there any part of her body that wasn’t in pain? Seeing her like this utterly destroyed him.

He loved Vic. Loved her with all his heart. He couldn’t bear the thought of not having her in his life. He bent down and kissed her forehead, finding a part that wasn’t swollen.

She opened her eyes. “Hi, handsome.” She said it so quietly that he almost missed it.

“Hey, beautiful. Hang in there. I’m not leaving you.”

She squeezed his hand and closed her eyes again.

For Cal, the minutes dragged by as his anxiety about her condition mounted. The doctor had said that her pupils weren’t responding correctly. That was bad. He was worried sick about her. She’d given him her phone as she’d gotten into the ambulance. It rang, and the screen said ASAC. He didn’t answer it. The doctors didn’t know anything yet, anyway.

“Was that my phone?” she asked, her eyes still closed.

“Yeah, but you can deal with it later. Just relax, sweetheart.”

She sighed in answer.

It was a full thirty minutes before they came for her. He kissed her again before she left. “I’ll be right here, honey.”

She nodded, her eyes anxious.

He held her hand until the last second as they rolled her away.

He paced the room, his mind bouncing from one thought to the next. He knew that getting the scan was going to hurt her. Damn. He wished he knew how to help.

She returned twenty minutes later, and the tech got her hooked up to everything again. When they were alone, Cal took her hand. “You okay?”

She sighed. “That was rough. I’m dizzy and a little nauseated.”

“I’ll be right back.” These were new symptoms. He found a nurse at the desk. “The woman in Room 15 is in for a possible concussion and she’s started feeling dizzy and sick to her stomach.”

The woman nodded. “I’ll tell her doctor.”

He strode back into the room. “The nurse is going to tell your doctor.”
