She squeezed his hand. “You know, there was a time when I questioned if I’d ever want kids.” She met his gaze with a smile. “Now that I love you, Cal, I’m looking forward to having your baby someday, even though it’ll be a bit hard with my career.”

He wished that he could kiss her, but he knew that if he drew her closer, she might fall out of the saddle. “I think that’s about the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me, sweetheart.” He looked into her eyes and smiled. “I can’t wait to be the daddy of your children.”

She sighed happily. “Three more months, and we’ll be married. And it’s back to house hunting when we get home. I can’t wait till we get our own place.”

“I really liked that one we looked at just before we left,” he said.

She nodded. “It was nice. We just need to check into the local schools and if that goes all right, I think we should take it.”

“I like the sound of that.” He squeezed her hand. “I love you with all my heart, honey.”

Her smile was radiant as she turned to him. “I love you more, cowboy.”

Chapter Fourteen

Vic stood on the fittingplatform at the bridal store so that her sister, Maria, and her mother could view the dress she’d just put on. She slowly turned in a circle.

Her mother, Elvira, said, “That’s beautiful, honey. I like that it has those lace sleeves. I don’t like these skimpy dresses that look like you’re going to a prom.”

“The neckline’s beautiful. It doesn’t scoop too low, but it’s still a little revealing. It’s sweet and still a little sexy. I think Cal will love it,” Maria said.

Vic smiled. “Well, that’s what counts, sister.”

“This dress really shows how tiny your waist is. The bodice fits just perfectly. I don’t think it would need any alterations.” Her mother tapped her index finger to her lips. “Mija, I think this is the one.”

“I agree,” Maria said with a grin. “You look gorgeous, Vic. Absolutely stunning.”

“I like it too.” Vic stepped down. “I just wish that it hadn’t taken three stores to find it. I’m exhausted. Why don’t we have an early dinner after we find the shoes and the clutch? I’m starving.”

Thirty minutes later, they were sitting at one of their favorite restaurants having a margarita. “Thank you all for coming with me today. I’d never have been able to choose something without your input. Lord, there were a lot of dresses.”

“You cousins are going to love their dresses,” her mother said as she took a sip of her margarita. “At first, I thought that they didn’t look like any bridesmaid dresses that I’d ever seen, but then I decided that you had the right idea with the navy. After all, you’re all grown women now.”

“That’s what I had in mind, Mom,” Vic said. “I wanted something everyone could wear to dressy occasions after the wedding.”

In a way, it was a sad comment on her life that she didn’t have a best friend to stand as a bridesmaid, but her focus until now had been her career at the expense of all else.
