She stuck her hand out the window and waved. He waved back as a hollow spot opened up in his belly.

He headed for his truck and for his hotel room to spend the night—alone, as he usually did.

Chapter Three

Vic clenched the steeringwheel. Yep. Leaving that Ranger in her rearview mirror had definitely been the right thing to do. But hell. Why did she always have to do the right thing?

We might have to do something about that. What exactly had Cal meant? Did he want to ask her out? Or was there more to it than that? She was intrigued and admittedly incredibly attracted, and her mind pored over those words as she drove back to her hotel.

Once in her room, she got back to her report. It shouldn’t take her all that long to finish it. Yet, as she tried to focus, the handsome face of the Ranger appeared before her, distracting her with his easy smile and even, white teeth. His bright blue gaze shone from his face like a beacon. Seldom had she seen anyone with such striking eyes.

She shook her head in chagrin. Beautiful women probably fell all over the guy. What chance did a woman like her have? With her plain brown eyes and black hair, she disappeared into a crowd here in West Texas. And while she was at work, she dressed as similarly to a man as she could. With a grimace, she looked down at her black Justin Roper boots, worn jeans, and navy-blue DEA T-shirt. Yeah, she was quite the catch.

With a sigh, she returned to her laptop. Enough mooning over some cowboy who wouldn’t take a second look at her. He’d probably been joking around tonight. She nodded. That was it. A joke.

Her text tone sounded. She glanced at her phone, and her pulse sped up as she read:

It was great getting to know you tonight. I’ve been curious about you for a while. And I meant what I said. You’ve never tried me.

Her heart thumped hard. Nevertriedhim? Holy hell!

Cal, admittedly I haven’t. You make me smile.

He shot back:

There’s always a first time.

She grinned and sent:

Sometimes there is.

He texted right back:

Think about it, beautiful. I’ll see you in the morning. But then, that’s business. Dang it.

She laughed.
