Toby:Sh!

Seth:Toby… you guys better not be texting in class!

Toby:No, sir! I swear we aren’t.

Me:Aren’t you texting during work?

Toby:Oh shit! She called you out! Hahaha

Paxon:We’ll talk to you later.

Justin:Bye, Cadence. Take care.

Bryan:Bye.

Toby:Ugh, fine. Bye, Candy Cane!

Seth:Talk to you later, Cadence.

I was tempted to smash my phone in frustration. Now I wanted to be at school. They actually reached out to me on their own. I hadn’t expected it. There was never someone concerned enough to text me when I missed school. My hands shook and I slowly reached over, picking my phone up. It took a moment, but I was finally able to reply back.

Me:Bye, everyone.

Blowing out a breath, I forced myself to put the phone back down. I kind of wanted to keep texting them. And it felt like they wanted to keep doing the same with me. My stomach fluttered at the thought.

Then dread began spreading through me. If we were getting closer, didn’t that mean they’d ask more questions?

There were too many holes, too many questions that if I were in the guys’ situation, I would be asking. Like why did I need to work so much? Where were my parents?

My lawyer, Amy, was adamant about me keeping up with school and doing my best to not miss anything. I didn’t want her or anyone else to think I couldn’t handle school and work.

Shaking my head, I pushed myself back into work and managed to get more done. Wanting to make sure I was on track, I checked my email, only to find more requests for work. I moaned. It seemed my name was starting to get around these last few months, which was a good thing, but darn, this was never meant to be the direction I wanted to go.

I wasn’t even sure what I wanted to do. Applications for college needed to be done, career goals made. Did I even want to go to college? It would be so easy to just keep doing what I was doing now once I graduated, turning it into a full-time commitment, but was that what I wanted? I knew this was what Lindie had planned for me. She couldn’t wait until I graduated and could put more focus into composing music.

But me? What did I want?

I didn’t know.

After working on my schedule, I went down, made a sandwich to tide me over, and then went right back into the studio, deciding I wanted to hide for the rest of the night. I wanted to get ahead with the work coming my way. Then, I’d be able to play with Calvin and the others guilt free.

Work consumed me for a few more hours before a ringing echoed through the house. With confusion, I looked around, trying to figure it out. It went off again before I realized it was the doorbell.

I didn’t even know I had a working doorbell. Running was not feasible, so they had to hold their horses while I made it to the front door.

“Calvin?” I asked, blinking down at him.

He gave me his sweet smile. “Hi, Cadence.” He held up a small plastic bag.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Paxon said you weren’t feeling well, so we went to the store, and he let me buy you medicine.”

“Oh.” I frowned and dumbly took the bag, peeking in to see basic cold medicine, chocolates, and a ginger ale. “Thank you, little man.”

He grinned. “Can we come in?” he asked.

“We?”
