Staring up at the clear, blue skies

But now I cry

Do you hear me, can you see me?

Do you miss me?

Do you think about me?

’Cause every day, you’re in my mind

I hope you know, I won’t let go

Hide my feelings so they’ll never show

All these years, all this time

I’m still holding on to you

And it’s all I have to hold onto

I don’t blame you

All I have to keep moving on

Do you hear me, can you see me?

Do you miss me?

Do you think about me?

‘Cause every day, you’re in my mind

I hope you know, I won’t let go

Hide my feelings so they’ll never show

All these years, all this time

I’m still holding on to you

I’m still holding on to you”

I strummed the last few notes and stood up. Everyone was staring at me before they realized I finished and then clapped. It wasn’t a roaring clap like what I usually got from performing at events. More like one filled with hesitancy. They weren’t sure how to take my song, how to respond, or even what to say.

That was a compliment in its own way.

Toby was completely still in his chair, staring at me. I couldn’t read the emotions on his face, but they made me uncomfortable. I couldn’t even tell if he liked the song or not. A chill ran through me as the world seemed to tilt for a moment.

I looked down at the floor as I went back to my seat. Everyone’s eyes dug into me, their questions practically hitting me in the face. I had gotten raw with them, more raw than any of the other students yet.

“Right. Good job, Cadence.” The teacher cleared her throat and pulled out the name of the next student.

It took me a moment, but I finally worked up the courage to look over at Toby. He turned to me with a seriousness that I never thought was possible. Not from him. I didn’t like it on him. I loved his carefreeness, but none of that existed in him as he looked at me, his lips pressed into a thin line, eyes dim.

He opened his mouth, but the teacher called the next name.

“Toby Braden, you’re next.”
