You’ve taught me all that I know

How to live, where to go

To find myself, and to grow

Like a guardian angel

I’m under your wing

When the ground’s unstable

You guide me through everything

Patient, kind, and strong

This is where I belong

Guardian angel

Guardian angel

Oh Oh Oh

Guardian angel”

By the end of the song, I had to wipe tears away. Ever since meeting Calvin and everyone else, my heart had begun to beat to a whole new tune and I wasn’t sure how to stop it or if I even wanted to.

Listening to Toby, the tune my heartbeat made changed once again.

I clapped and smiled as he did a playful bow to the group. He walked to his seat and sat down heavily, as if he used all he had in singing that song for us and he was exhausted.

I leaned over and got his attention. “Your aunt is the luckiest woman in the world to have been given the opportunity to take care of you. I haven’t met her, but from that song, I know she’s proud of who you are.”

Toby’s eyes widened, taken by surprise with my compliment.

He glanced at the teacher. “Fuck it,” he mumbled.

Next thing I knew, I was wrapped up in his arms, his head tucked into my shoulder. “And I’m the luckiest guy to have had the chance to meet and get to know you,” he whispered.

Wolf whistles echoed through the classroom, and I could hear the teacher clear her throat.

“If you’re done having your moment, please take your seat so we may move on,” Mrs. Odera said.

Toby chuckled and let me go, sitting back down. I missed his warmth instantly as I forced my stiff body back into my chair. I’d never been hugged like that before, and my brain was screaming for another one. He had hugged me like I was the only person in the world left, and he was afraid of losing me. My back could still feel the way his fingers curled into my shirt.

I pressed my hand to my chest as my cheeks heated to frying an egg temperature. I glanced over at Toby as the next student went to the front of the room. He looked over at me and the normal Toby was back. He flashed me a smile full of teeth, and I returned it.

I got to see an interesting side to Toby today. And while I wanted to see more of that version in the future too, I also didn’t. Toby was meant to thrum with energy and be wild. There was no taming the guy, and I wanted him to keep that energy for the rest of his life. That was who he was.

The rest of the class went by in a blink, and the bell rang soon after the last person performed. Everyone did really well, but I was still reeling from Toby’s song. He must have noticed I was out of it because before I realized it, I was at lunch with a sandwich in my hand. Where had the sandwich even come from?

“Are you okay?” Justin asked. It seemed like he was always asking about my welfare and in a way that was deeper than the usual ‘How’s it going?’ dismissive type of question.

For once, I couldn’t outright say that I was good. I blinked a couple of times, working through my emotions before replying. “I think so?”

“Dude, what’s wrong with her?” Bryan asked, looking at Toby.

Toby grinned. “I broke her last class. My awesomeness left her in a daze.”
