Treven cursed and pushed on the gas. “I’ll plow these suckers out of the way.”

Ellery screamed. He was insane.

They raced toward the roadblock, positioned to impact the point between the two priceless cars. They didn’t slow; in fact, they picked up speed. Ellery hoped no one was inside either of them, and that everyone had scrambled out of the way.

In an instant, they reached the cars. Ellery became a crash test dummy, whipped back and forth unpredictably and bouncing off airbags as her car rose into the air, twisted, and came down on its nose. She lost track of the play by play as she covered her face and tried to curl into a ball.

When the Audi came to a stop, and she was convinced they weren’t falling to their deaths, she lifted her head and saw familiar white dust filling the space.

Treven was screaming, throwing a tantrum, and punching the airbag with his fist.

Ellery undid her seatbelt and grabbed for his hand and the gun.

He whirled and slammed his fist and the gun into her head.

She released him, seeing stars.

“I’ll kill you, and then I’ll kill them all,” he growled, trying to push away from the airbag so he could turn and shoot her.

Ellery’s door ripped open. She looked up to see Derek.

Springing out of the car, she slammed into him.

Right next to them, Treven’s door opened and he flailed at the airbag, trying to get it out of the way so he could aim the gun.

Derek released her and dove at him, ripping the gun out of his hand and tossing it into the river. He yanked the murderer to his feet and then slammed him against the car. Treven howled in protest.

Men surrounded them. Derek held Treven in his grasp, in his power. The turd deserved to be pummeled.

Derek glanced around. His gaze settled on her, and he tossed Treven to the ground like the rubbish he was. Then he strode toward her, love and determination shining in his blue eyes.

The policemen and military men lifted Treven between them and carried him away.

Ellery gave a cry and flung herself at Derek. She hugged him fiercely, kissing him. He kissed her back, and then pulled back to frame her face, looking her over. “You’re all right?”

“Yes.” She nodded, tears coursing down her face. “I thought you were sending me away.”

“Never,” he said fiercely. “I amneverletting you go.” He kissed her, possessively and deeply. Ellery’s heart soared.

They pulled back, and she smiled tremulously at him. “I love you. I’m so sorry for everything.”

“I’m sorry too. Next time one of my brothers and the police chief fake a wanted woman’s death and sneak her out of the country and then she marries my brother, I’ll tell you.”

“And I’ll tell you when a crazy lady tricks me into believing the wrong person is the murderer. Poor Hattie. She’s going to loathe me.”

“I think you’re underestimating my daughter-in-law,” King Nolan said from far too close.

Ellery turned to see not only the king but Ray and Macey. Her gut sank. The two cars were demolished, one of which was the king’s prized Lambo. He’d said he could replace his first-born son but they’d stopped making that car.

More importantly than the car … Ray and Macey. She had to somehow beg their forgiveness. Macey’s gorgeous wedding dress was ripped and dirty like some action hero’s. Ray’s suit looked worse. She’d not only ruined their wedding dinner and their special day. Now she’d ruined Macey’s wedding dress.

“Oh, no,” she moaned, not sure what to apologize for first. “Your dress. Your beautiful dress.”

“My daughters-in-law are amazing,” the king continued. “Friendly, beautiful, forgiving, spiritual. It might take some time but they’ll forgive you. I hope someday soon, you’ll be one of them.” He smiled kindly at her.

“But … but … you can’t all just forgive me. You all came for me?” She looked from Ray’s serious face to Macey’s tear-stained one to the king’s welcoming and understanding smile. She loved him. Loved him fiercely like the father she’d always wanted. She swallowed against her dry throat and blinked to clear her too-wet eyes.

“We can forgive you,” Macey said. She stepped forward. “Because you were tricked, and you were trying to protect the family, not hurt us.”
