“Now you can start practicing again. Sounds to me like things are back on track,” Erin encouraged. “Just promise me you’re not going to go back out to secluded places alone, okay?”

“I promise,” I told her.

We talked a while longer, but I kept looking back at the expensive instrument on the counter. I was blown away with the gift. It was the nicest guitar I had ever held, and I knew playing it would be like playing pure luxury.

It was a really kind gesture coming from my really weird neighbor.

I wished I could just dismiss it as a nice thing to do, but I couldn’t. This was huge.

Why would he do this for me?

Chapter Twelve

Gavin

“Damn, pulling out all the stops right away, are we?” Miles teased when I told him about the guitar I’d gifted Krissy.

“Oh stop. It has nothing to do with the interest I have in her. I just feel bad for her. She was genuinely scared half to death, then on top of it, her guitar got broken in the struggle. I was about ready to pick it up and shove it down that asshole’s throat myself, but I got him out of there before I genuinely snapped,” I said.

“I’m glad you maintained that level of self-control, at least,” Miles told me. “It sucked ass when you were deployed. I don’t want to deal with you going to prison now.”

I laughed. “If I killed the guy, I would have made sure no one found his body. I’m just not sure Krissy would have been able to handle that.”

“I don’t know, she might have been game for it with how he’d just attacked her. I can see it,” Miles teased.

“Well, I decided not to risk it. But hey, I’ll keep it in mind next time I find myself saving a damsel from a monster,” I laughed. “Though with the last time being the first time I’ve ever had to save someone like that here in the States, I’m not really counting on it happening anytime soon.”

“That’s fair,” he agreed. “But still. Keep it in the back of your mind. Save a girl from a beast, kill the beast.”

“Got it,” I said.

“So, back to the guitar,” Miles said. “Did she like it?”

“She did. At least, I’m gathering that she did, considering she started playing it that afternoon, and I’ve heard her play it every morning the past few mornings,” I said. “And you know, I don’t know why hearing her play it was so nice, but it was really fucking relaxing for me.”

“Not as annoying as it once was?” he asked.

“It wasn’t annoying at all. I don’t know. It could have something to do with the fact she was safely over in her house playing that made me glad to hear it, or it might just be the fact that I’ve gotten used to hearing her play, and those two days she didn’t were just weird to me. Either way, I’m glad that she’s doing it again, and I don’t want her to stop,” I said, realizing I was rambling.

“Well, here’s hoping either the two of you live next to each other forever, or you man up and ask her out officially,” Miles said.

“I know, I know,” I replied. “I’m going to. I just need to find the right time.”

“What better time than when you save her from some asshole who was trying to kidnap her?”

“True, except what worse time to ask her out when some asshole just tried to kidnap her? There was just as much chance she was traumatized and didn’t want to have anything to do with men at that moment as she was willing to throw herself into my arms because of her happiness,” I said.

“Fair.”

“I’ll find a good time. I’m going to a show she’s performing at tonight, and who knows? Maybe after the fact would be a fitting moment to point out I would like to get to know her better,” I said.

“A show?”

“A gig, really,” I explained. “She’s playing at a bar tonight. From what I gather, she’s booked up at most of the hotels and bars around here every weekend for the next few months. I haven’t gone to any of the gigs she’s played yet, but Kim says she’s really talented, and she’s invited me to go before.”

“So might as well,” Miles said. “But are you going to just show up alone? Now you’re going to come off as the creepy one like, oh here, I bought you this really expensive guitar, and now I’m going to show up and just stare at you while you play it. Also, you’re really hot, will you go out with me?”

I laughed. “You really know how to make me feel like a creep, you know that? And you are the one who already told me to shoot my shot with her, so don’t go make me feel like a creep for doing it, okay?”
