There was silence between us for a moment, then she sighed.

“What the hell is wrong with me?”

“What?” I asked, surprised by the immediate turn of the conversation.

“You’re telling me how great I am. And I’m sure I can’t be the only one who feels this spark between us. But like, I don’t know, you’re still not kissing me. You didn’t last night, either, when you had the chance, and all I can figure is that there must be something wrong with me or you would,” she said.

“Absolutely not,” I replied. “There isn’t anything wrong with you. I just gave you that guitar that you said you’d pay me for. I don’t want you to consider it a form of payment when we kiss.”

“When?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.

“Whenever it happens,” I said with a shrug. “I don’t want there to be any cross between what I did and what you do.”

I expected her to promise me that there wasn’t any connection or to tell me she didn’t see it that way. Something. Anything, really. I was sure she was going to try to get me to be the one to lean in and kiss her now.

I didn’t expect her to lean over toward me, close her eyes, and press her lips to mine. It was so deliberate and so forward. I was the one caught off guard for once. But I recovered quickly, kissing her in return.

Krissy, however, kissed me hard as she leaned against me. She had a feverish need woven into the way her lips were moving over mine, and I sensed she was going to try to slip her tongue into my mouth.

Normally, I would love that. I would encourage that. In fact, I would be the one trying to get her to come with me into the bungalow so we could have the privacy to take it so much further than just the kiss. But I wanted to be careful with this. I knew there were warning signs and red flags, and I knew that if we were going to have a romantic relationship, we had to take our time.

I didn’t want this to blow up in my face, so I took a gentler approach. I kissed her in return, but I kept her at bay, not allowing her to make it overly sexual and instead stick to the passion that was clearly growing between us.

We kissed for a few minutes, letting the waves of the ocean fill the background, the moon shine down on us, and the quiet sounds coming from the nightlife in our little town hum softly behind us. I was so happy in the moment; I could have continued to kiss her forever sitting there on that log.

But my body wasn’t always on the same page as my brain, and it wasn’t long before my dick was pressing against my shorts, wanting to be involved in the moment. I had control over myself, but I didn’t want to make myself suffer too much over this, so I pulled back.

“What’s wrong?” Krissy asked.

“Sh,” I said. “Nothing is wrong. Don’t assume there is.”

“Sorry,” she said. “I guess I’m a little nervous.”

“It’s okay, so am I,” I told her.

“Are you?” she asked with wide eyes. “Why?”

“Because you’re amazing, and I don’t want to do anything to screw this up,” I said.

“Somehow I think that should be the other way around,” she told me, but I put my finger to her lips to stop her.

“Remember what I said about practice,” I told her. “Only say things that build yourself up.”

“Right,” she said. “Sorry.”

We rose, and I took her hand, walking with her to her door. I got the impression along the way she was expecting us to go into one of our bungalows and take this further. That was confirmed when she was surprised when I stopped outside her door.

“Do you want to come inside?” she asked.

“Not tonight,” I said with a shake of my head.

“Are you sure?” she asked. “I would like it if you would.”

“I know, but remember what I said about screwing this up?” I asked.

She nodded, so I continued, “I have rushed into too many things that have blown up in my face. I don’t want to do that with you. Don’t worry, there’s no deadline. We have the time to get to know each other. Trust me.”

She was visibly disappointed with my decision, but she didn’t press any further.
