“Erin gave me one of the adult coloring books she had but wasn’t using. I think I might start that,” she said. “There’s more than enough room on the bed. You can read, and I won’t bother you, will I?”

“You never bother me,” I told her.

She smiled once more, spreading out the colored pencils on the mattress in front of her along with the coloring book. I had seen those before. I knew they were supposed to be good for anxiety and relaxation for adults, but still, there was something about Krissy coloring in one that felt so endearing.

“Now this is my idea of taking a mini vacation,” I said.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean you and me in this nice condo, your friends close by, the wonderful day we’ve had, and just being able to sit and relax with each other. It’s nice. It’s like we don’t have a care in the world.”

“You know they’re your friends, too,” Krissy said. “They both really like you.”

“Sure, but you know what I mean,” I said with a shrug. “It takes time for me to really open up and let people come into my life. I consider them my friends because they’re your friends, but I’m not quite there yet myself.”

“Well, you should,” she grinned. “Because I’m pretty sure you’re part of the family now.”

I laughed. “Glad to hear it. I hoped they’d approve of the guy you decided to bring along with you.”

“How could they not?” Krissy asked. “You’re like the best thing to ever happen to me, and I couldn’t wait to bring you to meet the other people who mean the world to me. Now that I’ve got you all, it’s like my life has fallen together perfectly.”

“I don’t know about that,” I told her. “I’m pretty sure you’ve had a lot more good things happen to you than what I am.”

“No,” she said. “I don’t mean to argue, but I think you are incredible, and I’m lucky to have you. I think this world is a lot better for you being in it, and I’m proud that I get to be your girlfriend.”

“Pretty sure I’m the lucky one who gets to have you as my girlfriend,” I said.

“Maybe we can just call it even,” she told me with a smile.

“If you say so,” I agreed.

Krissy crawled toward me on the bed and gave me a kiss before going back to what she was coloring. It was like a complete one-eighty from where she and I had been for the past week, and it confused me. I didn’t understand why she suddenly was so tender and affectionate toward me, and I wondered what had happened that day that made her want to be.

She wasn’t coming onto me. While I would have happily had sex with her if she did, I was getting the stronger impression she wanted to just hang out and dote on me, but that wasn’t like her. She had been downright distant for the past few days, and even before that, though she and I were going fast with the sex, she wasn’t nearly as affectionate toward me as she was being right now.

Part of me wanted to ignore it in case this was something new she was trying and pointing it out to her would scare her off. I enjoyed it. It was only the fact that it was new for her to act this way that had me wondering what was going on.

After she gave me yet another compliment, I wasn’t able to hold back anymore.

“What’s gotten into you?” I asked, keeping my tone playful so she didn’t feel like she was being accused.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you’re not usually this, I don’t know, this tender,” I said, searching for the right words. “I’m not sure what to make of it.”

“Sure, I am,” she replied. “I might not be that great at showing it all the time, but I mean it when I tell you that you are the best thing to ever happen to me.”

“That’s just it,” I said, pointing it out to her. “Even if you do feel that way, it’s so out of the ordinary for you to say things like that.”

“Don’t you want me to?” she asked.

“Of course, but I want to know why you suddenly decided to do it,” I said.

“Who says anything had to happen?” she replied. “Maybe just being around Erin and her husband has been enough for me to realize just how good I have it with you, and I want to make sure you know I appreciate it.”

“I’d be inclined to believe that,” I said. “If that’s the way you did things back home. But you’re around Andrew and Kim, and you’ve already told me you talk to Kim about everything. I’m sure you’ve talked to her about you and me, right?”

“I don’t gossip if that’s what you mean,” she said, her tone almost defensive.
