“Then we are the two luckiest guys on the planet.”

Nikolai drags his finger over her arm. He does a loop, then makes another loop opposite of it. I’m entranced for a second until I realize he’s making an infinity symbol. Does he realize what he’s doing? Does she?

“Go ahead and ask me a question. I can’t think of a better way to be interrogated than with Big Boy’s hard-on prodding my ass.”

“Sorry, morning wood.”

“Keep it out of her for a minute. I need to know that I’m getting legitimate answers.”

“I can only wait so long.”

Fuck. I’m regretting sitting at the table with these notes, but I’ll let him have it. I’ll get to watch, and I’ll get my turn.

“Go ahead, ask me whatever you want. If I have to dig up painful memories, Big Boy’s going to make it all better, aren’t you?’

She reaches up and pats his cheek. She’s fucking unbelievable. I look at the list of questions.

“We have a list of all of your family members.” I hold up a piece of paper, full well knowing she can’t see it. “We have them broken out basically by their position in the family tree. Who are the people you want to protect?”

“Katya, for sure.”

“She’s the one in the wheelchair, right?”

“Yeah. She’s never done anything wrong and yet she took a bullet. She’s in physical therapy but it’s rough.”

Nikolai caresses the length of her body, over her hip, down her thigh, and then back up.

“Nothing’s fair in worlds like this. It’s why Erik and I do the jobs we do. We want to eliminate as much of this unfairness as possible.”

“But on a good note, I gave you a piece of information. Now I get what I asked for.”

“Wait a minute. I asked you for a list of names.”

“And you’ll get them, but I’m going to be sure I get lots of experience before we walk out that cabin door, get back in those cars, and leave.”

Fuck, she is thinking of leaving. She didn’t even hesitate. I keep my facade in place, as does Nikolai. We have to, in our industry. But in between our controlled moments, I’ve seen the way Nikolai looks at her, the tenderness in his eyes that hasn’t been there since he was nineteen. He’s fallen in love again. Damn, this is going to hurt.

Yesterdaywasourfirstfull day in the cabin, and for all I know, it could be our last. The guys have been evasive about how long we can be here. This morning, Nikolai’s on his phone having hushed conversations that he takes outside. Erik is in the shower.

Otherwise, it’s too good to be true. I’m learning everything there is to know about sex, and securing a safe future for the women in my family.

Niko and Erik keep talking to me about witness protection and they don’t mention themselves in that conversation. They’ve explained that I have to say goodbye to everyone. I don’t like that. In fact, I’m not likely to do it. With all of the information I’ve provided, they should be able to lock up all of the dangerous men.

But I don’t want to think about that.

Last night we made cookies. The cabin is stocked with a weird mix of ingredients. Whatever they left from previous visits. Plus, Nikolai brought some groceries.

Who knew cooking could be so much fun?

My mother’s generation cooked, but somewhere along the way they brought chefs in, so my generation doesn’t.

Such a shame. It was a blast. We made a mess. I got to see a fun side of the guys. Nikolai let me make the risky move of licking cookie batter off his finger. He swore that he had something he’d prefer I lick, but I did it just to tease him.

Maybe I could be a baker. I’ve heard Sugar D’s is always looking for help. It seems every time they get someone in there, they end up getting married and having less time available to work at the bakery.
