“You don’t have to answer. I already know the truth.”

I crawl up, pick her naked body up from the floor, and carry her in my arms.

“Wait, what are you doing?” she asks, her feet thrashing in the air.

“Taking you to bed,” I reply, ignoring her fight against any form of kindness so I can put her down on her pillow before I go back to grab the blanket. “You must be tired. I fucked you in your sleep.”

She yawns as I crawl into the bed with her. I pull the blanket over and pull her closer to me, snuggling her. “So dream of me instead.”

Her body is flushed with heat as I plant a hand on her waist, her skin covered in goose bumps when I softly caress her.

“Why are you doing this?”

My brow rises. “Can’t I take care of my woman?”

Her cheeks turn red. “Take care of me? But …”

“Do I have a reason not to?” I ask, softly pushing her hair aside so I can press a kiss to her neck. “Despite what you think, I’m not your enemy.”

She breathes out in puffs after each of my kisses, clearly affected, yet she still won’t let me into her heart.

“Who’s your enemy, then?” she asks.

My fingers clench around her waist. “You know who.”

“No, not the Skull & Serpent Society as a whole. I mean, who specifically? They can’t all have done you wrong?”

“Your brother cut off Nathan’s finger,” I reply.

She turns around in my arms. “I know that, and I understand why Nathan’s mad, but you have nothing to do with that.”

“I protect my friends,” I say, looking down at her from underneath my lashes. “So I came to get my revenge.”

Her hand slowly rises to my face, and I fight the urge to inch back as she touches that part of me I’ve hated for so long.

“This scar …” she murmurs as the tips of her fingers softly peruse my face.

It feels so strange, having a touch so soft on something so heinous and violent in nature.

“Felix gave it to you?”

“Dylan Caruso.”

She pauses and leans back to look at me. “That’s …”

“Your brother’s best friend,” I fill in for her.

She swallows. “Can you still see?”

I grab her hand and press a kiss to her gentle fingertips. “Not through that eye. But I can see enough to know all I want is in front of me.”

The left side of her lips briefly quirks up, but then she licks them to make it disappear.

But I definitely saw the smile.

Her hand slips out from underneath mine, and it trails around the tattoo underneath my heart.

“It looked red when I first saw it at the Shack. Was it new?”
