Later that night

I sit backand silently enjoy my whiskey on the rocks, watching the crowd dance. Considering the current dress code, it’s busy in this club, which surprises me. All black, no color, except for a red mask that covers half the face. A mask quite like the ones the Phantoms use, which is peculiar considering this is a club owned by the Rivera family. The family who also owns the Skull & Serpent Society, enemies of the Phantoms, and a thorn to my eye.

My hand clutches around the glass, and I take another sip to quell the rage firing up my heart. An exclusive section is tucked in the corner to the left, but I can take a peek inside from where we’re seated. Felix, Dylan, Alistair, and Penelope sit there, having a drink and chatting with their friends, and the second I catch a glimpse of their smiles, the glass I’m holding almost shatters.

Suddenly, a hand snakes around my thigh. “Relax.” Milo smiles at me. “They don’t know it’s you.”

“No, but I know it’s them,” I retort, placing the glass back on the table before I make a scene. Milo gently grabs my face and makes me focus on him. “Remember why we’re here.”

A smile tugs at my lips. He always knows how to calm me down … with a promise of violence. And I can’t fucking wait.

Because I’ve just spotted that diamond in the rough walking into the club in her thick five-inch black heels, a skinny pair of white jeans, and a V-cut black crop top with long sleeves, along with some pretty jewelry dangling down from her neck all the way to her belly button. The red mask she was forced to wear doesn’t remotely hide her identity. She’s dressed like a sweet little snack waiting to be unwrapped.

Perfect to sink my teeth into.

Perfect to unravel and destroy.

But I’ll let Kai have his little moment with her first. I’ll sit back and enjoy the show while he’s busy making her sweat until it’s finally my time to shine.

And I can’t fucking wait for the fun to begin.

LANA

“Don’t dance with any of those fuckers out there, got it?” Felix slams his drink down on the table.

I roll my eyes. “I don’t need your fucking permission, thanks.”

“Lana,” he warns. “I mean it.”

“Felix, don’t be so hard on her,” Penelope says.

“Yeah, let her enjoy the dick for once,” Dylan muses at him, dodging an immediate sucker punch by jumping up from the couch. “Missed!”

“Come here, you fucker,” Felix growls, but Dylan’s already run off onto the dance floor before Felix can grab him.

“Jesus,” Alistair groans, and he takes a casual sip of his drink. “I really don’t want to get involved in whatever this is.”

“No, you don’t,” I reply. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I—”

Felix grabs my wrist before I can turn around. “Is Jason here?”

“I don’t know, and I don’t care. Don’t get close with any guys here,” he grits.

“He’s worried about you,” Penelope adds.

I stare at him, both annoyed and glad that he cares about me so much he’d ruin my dating chances. But I trust Penelope. “I can take care of myself. You don’t have to worry about me.”

He swallows. “I’m your brother. I always worry about you. The same way you worry about me.”

He squeezes my arm, and I know what it means, what it’s always meant.

The gravity of his words … the powerful connection we have … it can’t ever be denied.

“I know,” I reply.

He finally releases me. “Go on, then. Have fun with your friends.”

“If you see Dylan, tell him he still owes me a drink,” Alistair says, clinking his empty glass on the table.
