“A lady who hasn’t been laid in months. That has to be a record for you.”

Shrugging, I try not to let the uptight virgin make me feel like a harlot. “I like sex. You would, too, if you would just give it a try.”

“Oh, excuse me for waiting to be with the right man at the right time. One who may be more turned on by me than my car.”

I let out an indignant huff. “So, I shouldn’t wear sexy matching undies?”

“I don’t know. How badly do you need some dick?”

“Lyla!”

“Well? I know the names of the parts, even if I haven’t seen them up close and personally.”

“My vibrator died a month ago, and I can’t afford to buy batteries.”

“Oh, Holly. That is like the saddest freaking thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life. Hold on.”

She picks up her phone, the screen tilting as she types on it. A second later, my phone gives a soft dinging sound from one of my apps.

“Did you just send me money?”

“Yes. Twenty bucks. Just in case tonight doesn’t go well, you can still buy a pack of batteries.”

“Thank you, but that was totally unnecessary. I was saving up…”

“You’re welcome,” she laughs as her face reappears. “Now, show me the outfits.”

Propping the phone up on a stack of paperback spines, I go over to my closet and pull out the two final contestants. “The short black dress or the short black fake leather skirt with a short, off-the-shoulder green sweater?”

“I’m picking up a theme – short.”

“Yes. You know, to show off my legs. We’ll get to the shoes once you pick.”

I hold out each one at a time toward the phone’s camera.

“I say you go with the skirt since the sweater adds a little color and warmth. It’s freezing there too, isn’t it?”

“Yes, which is why I was thinking I could wear my tall black leather boots.”

“Ooh, yes!” Lyla agrees with a nod of approval. “Put it all on, and let me see.”

“Last thing – matching undies or not?”

Her nose scrunches up in consideration before she says, “Matching. Black. In case you fall on your ass, witnesses won’t be able to tell if they saw your panties or the skirt.”

“Good idea,” I agree since there will probably be drinking involved, which means I won’t be as steady on the boot heels. “I’ll be right back,” I tell her before I scoop up the choices and head to the bathroom.

While I change out of my pj’s, I try to recall what my date looks like. It really was a brief encounter. I was too busy watching the price of the gallons tick by when Joe first approached me. When he was still there after I finished putting in ten dollars’ worth, all I could afford, I glanced over at him and realized he was lingering intentionally and checking me out.

He was cute enough in his jeans and oversized blue hoodie. His brown hair was flopping, falling in his eyes like it was a choice and not just in need of a cut.

I didn’t get a look at his eyes behind his aviator sunglasses, but his smile was nice.

He’s probably not the type of guy to bring a girl flowers on a first date or take me to a romantic candlelit dinner, but here’s hoping I was wrong.

When I finish fighting with my boots to get them on, I give myself a once-over in the bathroom mirror.

I look…like a girl who puts out on the first date.
