Her response appears less than thirty seconds later – an emoji with its head blown off, followed by,Have fun and be safe! I’ll keep texting but call if you need me.

Thanks. Love you, I send back before grabbing my new purse. It’s a small, black crossbody that is a little too casual for the dress, but I don’t care. The purse isn’t coming off me tonight, no matter what.

Tossing my phone inside and zipping it up, I grab my keys from the bar in the kitchen, and then I’m heading out the door.

Just as I reach my car, I hear the scuffle of footsteps on the pavement behind me. I turn around at the same time he says, “Where are you off to tonight looking like a two-dollar whore?”

Isaac.

It’s been so long; I had forgotten how intimidating he can look towering over you in his leather. The dark tattoos curling up his bare arms give him an even scarier vibe.

He looks hot as hell, like usual, even if his dark blue eyes are filled with fury.

Then I replay the words he just spoke, the first ones he’s spoken to me in six months.

Where are you off to tonight looking like a two-dollar whore?

“Excuse you?” I snap at him, whatever happiness I felt at his appearance fading at the insult.

“You heard me.”

He’s trying to hurt me – why, I’m not sure. But I won’t let him see the hurt in my eyes, on my face. That’s why I try to hurt him back. “Is that all my mouth on your dick was worth, Mr. Perry? Two dollars?”

“Answer my question.”

“You answer mine, and maybe I will.” Who does he think he is, showing up here, giving me orders after six months without a single word? I cross my arms over my chest and wait, but he refuses to respond. I almost smile when his eyes dip down to my cleavage. “I don’t have time for this. I’m late.”

I turn around, dropping my arms to open the car door, when he says, “Late for a date with a stranger you met on a goddamn app? Didn’t you learn your lesson after that fucker robbed you?”

“Screw you, Isaac!” I yell without facing him.

I get my door open an inch before he’s on me, the front of his body pressed to the back of mine. His right hand reaches around to slam the car door while the left yanks my keys out of my hand.

I spin around to face him, but he doesn’t back up a step. We’re nose to nose before I retreat until my butt hits the car.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I ask him.

“Where’s your phone?”

It takes me a second to respond to that out-of-the-blue question. “It’s in my purse.”

“Get it out and cancel.”

“What?” Cancel? He wants me to cancel the first date I’ve had in months? “No!” I shout at him.

“You can either warn him you’re not coming or leave him sitting there waiting because we’re going inside, right now.”

“You’ve lost your damn mind! How did you even…Lyla? Lyla told you I had a date tonight?”

“You don’t have a date tonight. Not anymore.”

I open my mouth to protest, and he strikes.

One second, I’m standing in front of my car. The next, I’m hanging upside down over his shoulder. My fingernails dig into the snarling dog patch to hurt him, stop him. It doesn’t do any good. I feel the cool air on my backside and know the bottom of my dress is riding up, showing my ass cheeks and skimpy black thong for all to see.

Isaac has the audacity to pluck that string like I’m an instrument.

“You…you…jackass!” I shout as he pushes my front door open, having already used my keys to unlock it, then slams it closed behind us.
