Rej’thorek’s gaze switches to me, his stare withering. I do not bow beneath it, though. I level him with my own glare, daring him to try to take Volikan and I on right now.

Over his shoulder, Laura pushes up on her toes and whispers something in his ear. I growl, about to snap at her as well for withholding information, when Cora squeezes my hand. Briefly, I let my gaze drop down to her, and her eyes are pleading. “Wait.” It’s a breathy word, but I huff and nod.

Cora seems to know her sister well because Rej’thorek’s face relaxes and he nods. Laura’s arms, now wrapped around his torso, squeeze him, and the Prince turns back to us.

“I do not know what is truly causing the tremors.” Volikan starts to growl softly, and Rej’thorek holds up a hand to stop him. “But my father has been disappearing at odd hours. My brothers have been whispering about his odd behavior, and some even say…”

His eyes sweep between the four of his, his shoulders drooping as he finally finished, “That he’s incurred the wrath of the gods.”

At this I scoff. I thought he was going to reveal some actual information, but the gods? That’s preposterous. That’s a ploy to get the suspicion off the King while he keeps fucking around.

“The gods don’t interfere with something as trivial as us,” I object. “To suggest that is dishonorable, Rej’thorek. You know such a thing. We do not call upon them for something of our daily lives.”

Rej’thorek shrugs. He doesn’t look wholly convinced about the rumors, either. “I don’t believe it, either. That’s just what I’ve heard. Beyond that, I have no idea what my father has been involved in.”

Laura’s eyes are burning over his shoulder, though, and I look down to see them trained on Cora. She’s nodding, and I nudge her gently.

She tips her head back to look at me, and I can see her mind whirring. “It’s odd he’s been disappearing…” she muses. “Is it so far-fetched to believe that he is in the kind of trouble he doesn't want anyone to know about?”

I scoff at that. Sometimes I forget how little our humans know.

Before I can answer that, though, Volikan explodes. Honestly, it’s pretty funny to watch the way the chaos magic crackles around him, surging up through him and lighting up his scars. I’d laugh if I wasn’t pushing Cora behind me.

He’s turning volatile.

“I don’t give a fuck if it is or not!” The glass to his right bursts, but it hits a wall of magic instead of his mate. “What is being done about the fucking tremors? Whatever their cause is not my fucking problem.” A piece of railing goes flying and Rej’thorek turns Laura so she’s between his body and the house. “I am going to be having a child soon! If the King pissed of the gods then that is his fucking problem, but I need a stable fucking home.”

The air is crackling, the sky exploding with more lightning. It’s been a while since I’ve encountered something like this, and the conversation just went from entertaining to threatening.

I’m about to sweep Cora out of here, and Rej’thorek is pinned under Volikan’s glare, clearly trying to find a way to diffuse this situation with all the humans here. If our mates were elsewhere, this would be a different conversation entirely.

Before either of us can move, though, a lilting voice breaks through the tension, and we all turn toward the still open door. “Someone pissed off the gods?”

NATALIE

I laugh, giddy as I cradle our son in my arms. Kha’zeth is practically pushed against me, insistent on being stuck to me. I thought he was overbearing before, but ever since Alvech was born, I’ve learned a whole new meaning to the word.

Alvech shifts in my arms, cooing softly, and I pat his bottom. “I know, baby.” I kiss the top of his head. “I know.”

“I don’t see the sense in this,” Kha’zeth grumbles, not for the first time, as we turn up the path to Anastasia’s house. “We should be at home.”

I give him a soft glare. “It is good for us to socialize. Besides, I’m tired of being in the house, and everyone is going to freak out when they see Alvech.”

He growls softly, and I already know how he feels about that. He wants to protect his son from everything – including three human women who could do no harm to a demon baby. I roll my eyes at him as I knock on the door.

Kha’zeth lets ten seconds pass before reaching around me and twisting the knob. “Kha’zeth–”

“They shouldn’t be surprised if people walk in their house when they’ve been invited and no one is answering the door.” His hand presses firmly against my back. “Now let’s get this over with.”

“You could at least pretend to be happy,” I whisper as he forces me inside.

It doesn’t seem to matter, though, because everyone is missing as soon as we enter. I look around, confused, until I hear a shout coming from the opposite side of the room. I spot an open door leading out to what I have to assume is a patio.

“I am going to be having a child soon! If the King pissed of the gods then that is his fucking problem, but I need a stable fucking home.”

Kha’zeth grabs me as we hear the shouting clearly coming from one of the males, but we’ve already reached the threshold. I don’t even mean to draw attention to us with an already heated argument going on, but the words fall right out of my mouth.
