“My Lady.” The dark elf bows to me. I don’t know what I am supposed to do. I have so much hatred for the dark elves who subjected my family, but this elf never did anything to me. It’s possible they have only ever known Ti’lith.

Like I said, upside down.

“Can I look around?” I ask, this elf seeming more inclined to at least answer my questions. I haven’t seen much of Rej’thorek’s home. The parts I have seen appeared quite grand. I am sure the rest of it is much of the same.

“I can show you around.”

My only options yesterday were the sitting room and the library, but it would seem Rej’thorek has opened up more of his home to me. The dark elf lists a few rooms, but I choose to go to what is familiar first.

Maybe I will run into Akos in the library again. Despite our difference in age, I find his company enjoyable. Like me, he has limited freedoms. Maybe that is why we connected so quickly.

The dark elf keeps their distance as we reach the library. I head inside and call out Akos’ name, but I don’t get an answer. I don’t sense another presence, but my senses are not as sharp as the demons.

But I don’t think Akos would hide from me. He must be somewhere else. I don’t know where he resides in the house, and I am sure it is a well-guarded secret.

Either way, he isn’t here.

I decide to take a book with me and pull one from the shelf at random.

I exit the library and have the dark elf take me around to the rooms I have been permitted to go to. It’s only a couple, but they are all beautiful. Demons have different sensibilities than elves. Admittedly, I have only seen Rej’thorek’s home, but I like to think the other demons are like him. It gives me hope for the other humans in Ti’lith.

Once I have seen what I am allowed to see, the dark elf takes me to the kitchen where a small feast awaits me. I do not know the different foods that are in Ti’lith, but some of them remind me of what is available in Protheka.

I rarely got the chance to eat such decadent things. The dark elves often waste food. They are obsessed with all the trappings of wealth. A large facet of elven society is showing off the useless trinkets they would buy for large sums of money.

But we mainly concerned ourselves with the food we could pilfer. As long as we didn’t get caught, we could eat to our heart’s content. But if a dark elf caught us with food that had passed through their table, punishments were given out generously.

Humans are considered below garbage, so our mouths daring to eat the food they do not want or our hands daring to hold onto the possessions they tossed aside is seen as a great insult.

I shake Protheka from my mind and focus on the meal before. I take a bite, closing my eyes as the tender meat melts in my mouth.

I’m unable to get far into my meal, though. A knock at the door interrupts me.

Who could that be?

Rej’thorek would simply enter. This is his house after all. And that scary friend of his would do the same. I don’t know if Akos is allowed outside, but I don’t think knocking is something he needs to do either.

Maybe Rej’thorek has a visitor. I cannot think of who it could be. He hasn’t spoken much of his life. Most of what I know has come from Akos.

I hear the door open, and a dark elf starts to greet someone, but there is a commotion. It sounds… wrong.

I wonder if I should do something, but what help could I offer. Plus, the dark elves are slaves here. It’s possible what is happening at the front door isn’t even something I can intervene in. But then things quiet down. I hold my breath, waiting for what is going to happen next.

“Hello?” A smooth, feminine voice floats over to me.

It isn’t what I expected to hear. It’s enough to pique my interest.

I pick myself up and head to the front door.

When I turn the corner, I come face-to-face with a demon.

And she’s beautiful. Her long, fire red hair stands vibrant against her pale gray skin. She’s only slightly taller than me, but her presence fills the entire room.

I flinch under the gaze of her sharp black eyes.

What is she doing here?

I shouldn’t be surprised that beautiful demon women visit Rej’thorek’s home. Of course he had a life before I came crashing into it. It’s just difficult to be confronted with it so suddenly. After getting over my awe of the demon in front of me, I notice the dark elf that usually opens the door is not there.
