I must have finally struck a nerve with Fohri because he takes several long steps towards me, until his face is inches away from mine. I can feel his hot breath on my face, and I can smell the rage that pours off his body.

His nostrils are flared and his pupils are dilated, and I cannot help but smile cooly at him. “I want a toy,” he shouts in my face, and I wipe the spit off my face as he continues. “And she is as good a toy as any. And don’t worry, I won’t bring this house into disrepute for that long – she’s a human. She probably won’t last a week.”

“Do you care so little for life? That you’d be willing to use up the life of an innocent for your own sick games?” My voice is low. I have never heard myself sound as dangerous as I do now.

I do not care about the humans. They make good servants, but they’re mostly useless. However, I am not so cruel that I would rape one of them until they are dead. Because that is clearly what Fohri plans to do.

“You seem to be under the impression that I care about your opinion.” Fohri’s voice has adopted the careless tone again. “You seem to be under the impression that I care about your – and everyone else’s – impression of me. And to answer your question – no, I do not care about the life of one measly human.”

“If the council finds out about this…” I am finally willing to use the one true threat in my arsenal. “Well, you’d rather face a starved likar with no weapon.”

“And who will tell them?” He turns to me mockingly. He is wearing his most expensive clothing, as he usually does. Again, his vanity is blinding. Because I know that he certainly does not intend to impress the human girl. Once more, images of her struggling beneath him rise in my mind.

Pain sparks through my hands, and when I look down, blood is dripping onto the carpet of my brother’s room.Release your hands. Your nails have cut through the skin on your palms.I take a deep breath. “They will find out, if I tell them.” My voice is calm.

I take a step away from Fohri. He might be a useless asshole, but he hasn’t slacked on his physical training once in all these years. We are evenly matched, and I know that he could hurt me if he wanted to.

And I have just said fighting words.

Prepare yourself. Find a shield and a weapon. And remember that he’ll fight dirty.

Fohri’s eyes are narrowed when he looks at me. He runs a hand over his hair, as if to smooth the flat surface. Then he laughs. And it is so chilling that I know in that moment my brother is pure evil.

“The council won’t find out about this. Or more problems will arise than you’ve ever prepared for brother.”

“Is that a threat?” My voice is cool.

Fohri grins at me again.

He is not worried about a damned thing. He really thinks that he can get away with everything.

“It is a threat,” he inclines his head almost graciously at me. “And it is also a promise.”

“I won’t let you get away with this.” The composure has left my voice. Now, it is shaking with anger.

“What will you do?”

Is he right? Will I tell the council?I have to resort to begging within seconds. “Can’t you see how this will damage us? Our own people are threatening to rebel against us. Can’t you see that if the council finds out about this, about you, we will lose all the power that we have worked so hard to gain?”

All the power that I have worked so hard to gain.

“Like I said, the council will not find out about this, if anyone in this household wishes to remain in this household,” Fohri tells me. Then he sweeps past me.

Sudden desperation surges throughout my body.

He is about to hurt that human woman in unimaginable ways. I cannot let this happen. If the council finds out about this…

Maybe Fohri is right. Maybe the council shouldn’t find out. Maybe one human life won’t make a difference.

My thoughts shame me. But what can I possibly do?

Fohri leaves his rooms with a flourish. There is a spring in his step as I watch him walk away.

I am dizzy with nausea as I follow him out of the room. How am I going to prevent this atrocity? How am I going to save the Renzui name?

And why do I care so much about a single human life?
