I lean against the wall, watching as Ellie continuously falls from the wall. I admire her spirit, for every time that she falls down, she gets right back up and makes another attempt with more effort.

“Shit, I’d probably be the same if my brother was after me.”

As marvelous as her tenacity is, I find myself chucking as she falls. Suddenly, I realize that if the wrong pair of eyes spot her, it could spell a whole load of trouble. I know there’s no way she’s going to get up that wall so I decide to make my approach.

“May as well be me that catches her trying to escape.”

I go prone, sneaking up to her from behind. I stop when I’m about ten feet away, watching as she makes a final attempt to scale the massive wall. Again she falls flat on her back.

“Fucking damn it,” she hisses as she rises to her feet. “How am I going to do this?”

“For starters, it’s going to take more than a pair of human hands,” I say, startling her.

She spins around violently with wide eyes. At the sight of me, I expect her to scream and cower at my feet. To my surprise, her gaze softens and she steps forward. Now I’m the one with wide eyes.

“You there, you must help me,” she demands.

“What?”

“You’re the good brother, and I know you’re just as unhappy about this whole thing as I am.”

“I…”

“Please,” she begs, taking hold of my hand. “You’ve got to help me out. I know you’ve got a good heart, I can see it in your eyes.”

“I… I can’t,” I sigh, taking my hand away from her. “Don’t get me wrong, the last thing I want for you is to be my brother’s plaything but if I help you get out of here, Fohri would know I lent you a hand. He’d come after us both.”

Ellie’s shoulders slump. She takes a few steps back and reclines against the wall.

“Well then I have no hope of ever getting my life back.”

A wave of guilt overcomes me. “Wait,” I reply. “That doesn’t mean I can’t stop my brother from making his advances on you.”

She looks up at me with a glint of hope in her eyes. “You can?”

“I promise you I’ll do my very best. Come on then, we best get you back to your room.”

Her eyes move to look behind me. Her expression suddenly turns to dread. I turn around to see an irate Fohri approaching with his trusted guard Brilyk by his side. As if by instinct, I pull Ellie behind me.

“You asshole!” he yells, burning a hole through me with the intensity of his glare. “First I go up to the tower to find Ellie isn’t there, now I discover it’s you who has taken her?”

“Calm the fuck down! It’s not like that!”

“I told you to stop meddling in my affairs! Ellie is my property, do you understand?” he snaps. He turns to Brilyk. “You, my friend, have a very special assignment to do.”

“What will you have me do, my lord?” says Brilyk.

“You are to stick by Ellie’s side permanently,” he sneers. “Keep her away from everyone else. No hands are to be laid on her unless by me.”

Behind me, Ellie quivers with fear.

Fuck, things just got a whole lot more complicated.

Damn these nobles—who do they think they are? Why do I need to take care of the human! That bastard Fohri has just thrown a wrench in my plans. Taking care of this little human thing will only get in the way of them.
