Before I can reply, a familiar voice calls out to Ellie. We both turn around to spot Ihokha approaching.

What the fuck does this guy want?

There is a noticeable glint of desire in his eyes, a sight I don’t like the look of. Given his brother’s reputation, the urge to protect Ellie rises within me. I fight back the urge to spring forward at him, knowing everything is fucked if I do.

Unexpectedly, Ellie goes to greet him. They take each other’s hands as he plants a kiss on her cheek.

What in the…

They walk by me, Ihokha having taken my place as if I was never there in the first place. Ihokha ignores my presence completely, only further igniting my hatred for him. Reluctantly, I take post a few meters behind them, following as they continue the garden trail.

“So,” says Ihokha. “I hope you’re not dying of boredom out here by yourself.”

Does this fucker even know that I’m here?

“Oh I’m fine, Brilyk has been keeping me company.”

“So I see. Well, at least now you’ve been joined by someone who is here by choice.”

What the fuck? Son of a…

“What have you been up to since Fohri left?” asks Ellie.

“Just continuing my normal duties. In reality, nothing has changed. I handle the everyday running of the estate while Fohri just reaps the benefits of his title.”

“I thought just as much. You seem much more capable as a leader,” says Ellie in a tone a bit too suggestive for my liking.

I’m about to butt in when Ihokha blurts an insane idea out of his mouth.

“Say, I would very much like to keep this conversation going all day. Why don’t you join me for dinner tonight?” he asks.

“I’d love to,” replies Ellie.

I can’t fight it anymore. I spring to Ellie’s side and grab her by the wrist, surprising both her and the piece of shit trying to take her away from me.

“What are you doing?” hisses Ellie.

“What’s gotten into you Brilyk?” says Ihokha.

“I’m under strict orders from Infnore’s leader to keep Ellie away from everyone else,” I reply, tightening my grip on her wrist. “That includes you.”

With that, I whisk her away back to the manor.

ELLIE

They’re all the same!I trusted Brilyk, but he turned out to be just like Fohri.I am angry and disappointed, and the two emotions blend weirdly inside me. My face is hot and tears spring to my eyes as I try to twist out of Brilyk’s grip.

They’re all the same. All dark elves are the same!

Except maybe Ihohka, who I actually enjoy spending time with. I am angry at being manhandled so unceremoniously – so painfully – by Brilyk. And I am disappointed because I have actually grown fond of him. Very fond of him. But his behavior now is showing me that maybe he is just like Fohri.

Technically he is enforcing Fohri’s rule, but I thought now that Fohri was gone, Brilyk wouldn’t be as strict. Maybe he is just a sucker for the rules.

“I can’t believe you’re doing this!” I huff the words out as he drags me away from the garden.

My neck is now as hot as my face, and I must be as red as the sky when the sun is setting. Angry tears brim up in the corner of my eyes, and I slap at Brilyk’s hand as he continues pulling me away from Ihohka.
