I wonder what I’m going to do now that this is all over.

I find myself lounging around with the rebels, a drink in each of my hands as the conversations grow heartier and the laughs grow louder.

“Did any of you hear the news?” asks Vaskuum. “It’s quite alarming.”

“No, do tell!”

“There’s word spreading that the lady of the land is seeking to bring in more humans to Infnore!”

The news sprouts murmurings and excited whispers amongst the rebels. I have already caught word of the development thanks to Brilyk. It made me realize that in all my time fighting for a better Infnore, I was only ever in pursuit of the interests of the dark elves.

Not once did I ever give consideration to humans, mainly due to the fact there’s not a lot of them present in the villages. All my life, I have thought of them as weak, both in spirit and in body.

However, I was proved wrong of my assumptions by the lady of the land who is anything but weak. Despite Ellie only being in power for a short amount of time, a lot of villages have already seen improvement, apparently due to her visits and offerings of gifts and food.

I know of human treatment across other continents and how badly they are looked down upon, with some even being enslaved. That’s why I look upon Ellie with a smile, to see a member of an already oppressed species put the people of Infnore first before relishing in her own luxuries as a wife to the leader of the nation.

No doubt, she lives a rich lifestyle now but she’s been quick to show some of those gifts to people in need. It has only made me welcome the idea of more humans. If she is so kind then surely other humans must be.

My smile is quickly removed when I hear the cursing and foul language at the notion of more humans here in Infnore, spoken aloud by some of my men.

“I just don’t see how humans will benefit the land,” says Vaskuum.

“I agree,” says Gausniel. “There’s still barely enough food to go around as is. This isn’t the future I was fighting for.”

“I think you’re all being incredibly selfish,” I reply, much to everyone’s surprise.

“Gavarn,” laughs Arvak. “I’m glad to hear someone speak some sense. I was just reminding everyone of the good that the lady of the land has done for us thus far.”

“Indeed, and it’s only going to continue.”

“I don’t understand Gavarn,” retorts Gausniel. “Why should we root for humans?”

“Look, all of us worked together to achieve the impossible, we won a better Infnore for all. All should include any new race who wish to make a living for themselves here. There’s nothing wrong with hard, honest work.”

“I don’t know about all of this,” says an uneasy Vasskum.

“None of us do,” I say calmly to show I’m not trying to fight. “Here’s the thing though, we have a responsibility to be open to new things now that a new world is upon us. Otherwise, we’d be no better than any of the rulers that came before us.”

“Spoken wisely,” replies Gausniel. “I suppose you’re right. We shouldn’t be so quick to judge.”

“I’ve already put my name down for consideration in helping to screen any new human arrivals.”

The others recoil in surprise and shock. “Really?” quips Arvak. “I know you’re keen on having humans here but I never expected this from you.”

“Well, Infnore is under new leadership. It’s changing fast with each passing week. If we don’t keep up with it, we could easily fall behind.”

“Speaking of leadership, here comes our boy now,” exclaims Gausniel as he points behind us.

I turn to see an approaching Brilyk, He extends his arms as we envelop each other in a hug.

“Thank you so much for coming, Gavarn,” he says, his voice filled with happiness. “As well as the rest of you, it really means a lot.”

“Congratulations, brother. Each and every one of us is proud of you, though…”

“What is it?”

“Well, none of us ever expected to see a rebel getting married on Renziu territory,” I chuckle.
