When I open the door, he’s as handsome as ever, wearing tan shorts, a baby-blue t-shirt, and sandals. His eyes flare and pupils dilate, reflecting a hunger I’m becoming accustomed to after only a short period. A blush rushes my cheeks from his obvious perusal, pleasing him immensely, if the predatory smirk is anything to judge by.

“Hey, baby. Miss me?”

Suddenly shy, a cautious smile tips one side of my lips. “Yes.” The word was barely a whisper.

“Good.” He kicks the door closed behind him as he enters, heading toward the kitchen. “Missed you too, Kitten.” After dropping the brown bag on the table, he turns and yanks me closer until we’re snug together. His nose immediately buries in my hair and breathes against the hollow of my neck, trying to absorb as much scent as possible. “I grabbed burgers tonight. That okay?” He doesn’t bother coming up for air, just murmurs, brushing his words against my skin softly. A full body shiver runs the length of me, drawing a rumble from deep within his throat, vibrating his chest against mine.

“Of course.” My knees threaten to buckle as he nuzzles deep again, groaning his pleasure.

Jaxton untangles himself all too soon, guiding us to the table where we sit and eat. Conversation is easy, as I tell him about dad’s demands of meeting him, and then ask about his day. He grumbles about not getting along with a co-worker but not having a choice to work with them. It’s not until we’re finished eating that I remember what Roman said about filming in town.

“Hey! Did you hear about the movie they’re filming here?”

Jaxton pauses for a fraction of a second, but I notice the bit of panic that widens his eyes. “Yeah, I did. Kind of weird for a small town.”

“You, okay?” I ask, wondering what’s spooked him.

“Yeah… no. I mean, yeah, I’m okay. Works been distracting today—too much for one day.” He blows out a breath, as if the words are difficult to articulate.

“Oh, sorry to hear that. Good thing you’re done and relaxing with me for the night.” The wink I flash him loosens the tension tightening his shoulders, as I click play on the movie we’ve chosen for the night.

Chapter Six

Avery

“T

hat’s it. Get up. We’re leaving.” Jaxton startles when my ass grinds into his dick because I sit up suddenly. His hands slip to my waist and grip my hips, using the leverage to nestle us perfectly together before subconsciously undulating underneath me.

“What?” The sudden outburst confuses his sex-driven brain, trying to focus on words instead of the warmth our bodies are creating.

“Let’s go out! I can’t stand sitting inside any longer. My burn is better—plus, it’s dark out, no sun to make it worse.” His eyes are glazed with desire, but he finds his train of thought.

“Where do you plan on going this late?” He protests now that he’s sitting up, caging me with his arms.

“I want to take you somewhere special—but you can’t ask questions.”

He caves easily with a pouty bottom lip and follows me out to the car. We drive in silence for a while until he can’t handle the unknown.

“You going to tell me where we’re going yet?” he chuckles, his eyes alight with excitement.

“No questions.” I growl in warning, but the effect is like a kitten with mittens, instead of a cougar with claws. Nowhere near contending with the growls, he sets loose.

A huge grin spreads, while a predatory glint reflects in his golden depths. “Easy, Kitten. Wouldn’t want you to injure yourself.” Then he counters my measly purr with a deep throaty rumble that rivals mine. His hand tracing my thigh, until he’s tucking his fingers into the apex against my heat.

Luckily, our location arrived, and we parked at the dead end. Excited to share another one of my secrets with him, I jumped out of the car and pop the trunk. Jaxton’s laughing, a bit of my childish banter becoming infectious when snags the blanket out of my hands and shuts the trunk.

“Come on. This way.” Our fingers lace together,

tugging him in the correct direction.

Our location is only a hundred yards in, so we break through the tree line in a matter of minutes. “Here we are!”

Jaxton glances around, confused, since we’re still surrounded by trees. “Baby, all I’m seeing is a fuck-ton of trees. What am I supposed to be looking for?”

I purposely hold out a moment longer before rolling my eyes with sass. “Not here, you goof. Through there.”

He trails behind the remaining ten yards before breaking through the clearing. Even though this is Jaxton’s first time here, a subtle gasp informs me he recognizes my special place from our conversations. I let him overtake the lead and watch his face transform in wonder. The moon and stars reflect off the black mirror of the lake, illuminating the field of tiny white flowers littering the ground, as if glowing under black light.
