“Is it cold?”

“Yes.”

“Then it’s perfect.”

Dip tips the beer to his lips, and my eyes zero in on the way his throat bobs when he swallows. When he’s done, he sets the bottle down and levels his gaze on me.

“So, whaddya wanna do tonight?” he asks.

Heat swirls in my belly at his suggestive tone. The sensation is unfamiliar, but not unwelcome.

“I was thinking we could just hang out,” he says when I don’t respond. “Keep it simple for now.”

“H-hang out?”

“Yeah. Hang out. Ya know, two people spending time together doing… whatever.”

“I know what hang out means.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“I’m just… You confuse me.”

“How so?”

“Earlier, when we talked, you seemed interested in a lot more than hanging out.”

“So did you.”

“I was.” I shake my head. “I mean, I am, but…”

I avert my stare, and Dip reaches across the wood to grab my hand. Electricity zings up my arm, making me want to pull away and hold him forever all at the same time.

“Kennedy?”

“What?”

“If you can’t tell me what’s on your mind, this will never work.”

I huff out a breath. “It’s not that easy.”

“Sure it is.” Dip uses his free hand to grip my chin gently, forcing me to look at him. “I wanna bury myself in you so deep that you don’t know where I stop and you begin. I wanna learn every single detail about your life, your dreams, your desires, and help you discover all the new things you want to discover. I want you, all of you.” He grins and shrugs. “See, easy.”

How does he do that? How does he make me want to latch on to his filthy words and promises? How does he know exactly how to make my mind spiral out of control and feel insanely calm within the span of a few seconds?

I take a deep breath. “I’m interested in more than hanging out. But this is all new to me, and I need you to be patient. I’m not used to speaking my mind let alone having someone around who gives a damn about what I have to say.”

“I can be patient.”

“Good.”

“So, wanna hang out tonight?”

“You’re relentless,” I accuse, but there’s no heat in my tone.

Dip tilts his head, his expression thoughtful.

“Do you want me to back off?” he asks.
