When she whimpered, it felt like someone had plunged a knife into my gut and twisted it. Hard.

She couldn’t speak, likely couldn’t even walk. She was shaking far too hard for that.

He hurt her.

Badly.

He needed to die. But now he’s loose.

I snarl soundlessly.

I’ll get him next time. Wherever he is,whoeverhe is, I’ll get him.

Aden strides past me. At the end of the street, he turns right, Saige cradled in his arms.

I trail them, leaving my abandoned clothes where I shoved them behind a dumpster before I shifted. By the time I go back for them, my cuts, bruises, and broken bones would’ve healed because thankfuckfor shifter healing.

It’s a short walk to Aden’s apartment. Not even fifteen minutes. But that doesn’t mean something can’t happen to them on the way.

With a wolf keeping watch, it won’t.

Aden never turns or seems the least bit aware that he’s being followed every step of the way. I stick to the shadows and hope anyone who catches a glimpse of me sees a lost white dog and not a white wolf.

They make it back to his apartment with no sign of the wolf from the bar. As they disappear inside, the door slamming shut behind them, I tuck myself in a dark corner near the building with an unobstructed view of the entrance.

Looks like it’s going to be a long night.

Iplace a cocktail in front of a smiling girl wearing an oversized yellow badge proclaiming it’s her twenty-second birthday. I’m turning to give her friend an identical pink, fruity drink when something makes me look up.

My eyes connect with a blue stare two feet away.

It’s so close I should have known he was there. Yet somehow, I didn’t feel his attention.

Nathan.

“You’ve got your work cut out making things right, sweetheart,” he says, in that slow drawling way he speaks, as if no one has anything better to do with their time than to listen to him talk.

I take a step back.

He takes one forward, and the table with the two girls just… melts away.

A slow smile creeps across his face as he inches closer. “Not just with me.” He licks his lips and I know he’s thinking of it. The things he likes to do to me. The things that mean my life is in his hands.

He likes the control it gives him, to know he can kill me anytime he wants, but even while his body is shattering with his release, he still has perfect control of himself.

“You know he won’t kill you.” Nathan prowls closer. “He’ll just make you wish you were dead.”

I drop my tray. I don’t hear it land as I back away.

His smile turns darker. Rich with anticipation. “Or maybe he’ll give you to me. Forever.”

He lunges.

I scream.
