"You sure about that?" his voice is low as dark amusement stirs in his eyes. There’s a challenge in them. A dare.

I nod. "Yes."

When his fingers brush against my neck, I fight the urge to cover the scars with my hair. "These tell me you have a reason to fear shifters."

"I'm not afraid of you."

"Because you think I won't hurt you, that right angel eyes?"

"Yes."

Gasping when he nudges me, I stumble back.

"How about now?"

His hand is like a brand on my arm when he stops me at two steps. Or maybe it's the way he's staring into my eyes that’s making me feel like I’m burning up.

"I’m not afraid."

For the longest time, he doesn't speak, as if he thinks I have more to say.

I don't.

And then slowly, he drags his hand down my arm, a bracelet of heat, before it clamps around my hips.

He nudges me back again, this time following. "Now?"

"No."

He backs me up, and I just go, not fighting him on it because he's moving me and I want to go.

"And now?" he growls.

"No."

His next nudge isn't a nudge but a shove. My back slaps against wood. The sound echoes, almost as loud as my gasp of surprise. His expression turns expectant. "Door’s right behind you, angel eyes."

I lick my lips, and his gaze darkens. "I know."

When his hands grip my wrists and slam them over my head, I struggle to catch my breath. My ribs ache, but there’s no way in hell I’m telling him that.

And then he steps into me, his hips pinning me to the door. "Now?"

His eyes burn and his chest heaves as if he's just as breathless as I am.

"I'm not afraid."

He lowers his head enough that his breath kisses my lips. "You should be."

“I…” Why can’t I find the words I want to say? And what is it about the scent of his skin that makes me feel like I’m losing my mind?

“You…?” he murmurs.

The moment stretches, him staring at me, and me at him. He's waiting for me to run. I read the thought as clear as if he'd spoken the words aloud.

I angle my head up, closing the distance between us to an inch. Maybe less. "I'm not afraid of you, Kade."

A truck rumbles past a few streets away. That's how silent we are, Kade and I, eyes locked, breaths heavy.
