Not like I did. That doctor wouldn’t have had to walk more than five steps to grab a nurse to check out Saige. But no. It just had to be fucking him.

Dariel tugs again. Harder this time. “We’re in the same hospital Saige was in before. Didn’t you think that maybe they have some unfinished business?”

I drag my gaze from the open door and toward Dariel. We’re starting to attract attention from a couple of the nurses in scrubs hovering near the nurses’ station. Since we’re standing in the middle of the hallway, sooner rather than later, one of them is going to want to know what the fuck we’re doing.

“And you still think it’s a good idea to leave them alone?”

Dariel’s blank expression doesn’t change. “They knew each other.” He speaks slowly. “A doctor had his throat ripped out in a hospital parking lot, and despite her fear of… you can probably guess what. Maybe, justmaybe, she went with him because she wanted to talk to him about it.”

I stare at him. It has been the longest fucking day ever. Too fucking long.

Now this.

It takes a second—probably more than a second—for his words to sink in. After scrubbing a hand across my tired eyes, I get it. “You think she blames herself?”

Dariel’s grip tightens before he propels me toward the vending machine, damn near dragging me along. “I think they both knew the dead doctor, that’s all I think.”

I take a second to process Saige and the doctor’s history. “You think he tried to help her?”

A doctor called Simon Trevor had his throat ripped out in a hospital parking lot, trying to get Saige away from her fucking crazy ex. Could this one have tried to help her as well?

Dariel sighs and rakes a hand through his short, dark hair. “I don’t know. But I do know it doesn’t help to kill the guy who’s the reason that Aden is still breathing.”

I curse under my breath. I hate that I’m not ripping this guy’s throat out right this fucking second.

Most of all, I hate that Dariel is fucking right.

And this fucking hospital. I wrinkle my nose in disgust at the antiseptic or whatever the fuck that smell is that makes me want to retch.

I’d have no trouble taking any guy who was eyeing Saige the way I caught this surgeon doing in the waiting room somewhere nice, dark, and quiet and telling him why it’d be a good idea for his future to stay the fuck away from her.

Better yet, showinghim with my teeth and claws.

But not this guy.

This guy saved Aden when I’m the reason he had his chest ripped open in the first place. So he gets a pass.

This time.

As soon as Aden is better, if this surgeon is still sniffing around Saige, it’ll be the last thing he ever does.

“You’re quiet,” Dariel says as we stop in front of the vending machine, and he releases my arm. “Please tell me you’re not working out how to kill the doctor and get away with it.”

I spare the machine a disinterested glance. I have no interest in shit coffee or tea. When I spot peppermint tea, my gaze sharpens.

Saige could do with one of those. And sleep. She looked fucking exhausted, with dark circles under her eyes. Still beautiful, but ready to drop.

“I’m thinking,” I mutter.

About ripping the good surgeon apart the second Saige has her back turned.

Dariel shoves a hand in his pocket, rifling through it. “I say again. Please do not tell me you are busy planning the doctor’s bloody demise.”

I glance over at him. He must have just realized the only things we stopped to grab before we followed the ambulance to the hospital were clothes and his car keys. Cash for the vending machine wasn’t exactly high on our agenda. No problem. If Saige needs a peppermint tea, she’ll get one. One good thump and this machine will give us whatever we want.

I clap him on his arm. More to distract him because he’s looking at me as if he knows exactly what I plan on doing to the doctor. “How the fuck can you be the more reasonable one here? Hours ago, you—”

His eyes flash bright green, and a low growl rumbles from his throat. A red-haired nurse stepping out of a patient’s room four doors down glances our way.
