Because maybe I’m not meant to survive Rylan.

“Saige…” Dariel starts.

I shake my head. “This morning, I meant what I said.” Behind his shoulder, I glimpse Kade, Harley, and Detective Morgan standing in the hallway so I can’t say everything I intended to. Not with a cop eavesdropping. “If you cage something for too long, you break it.” My vision swims. “Trust me. I know.”

I’m turning away again. And the next…

Lips crash onto mine, and they cling. Dariel’s kiss surprises a soft gasp out of me. Before I can think of responding or pushing him away, he breaks it.

He lifts his head to peer down at me. “I didn’t kiss you before, and I don’t think I’ve ever regretted anything more. If you feel the need to punch me in the throat, do it.”

A stupid need to smile creeps over me. “You’re not some hero in a movie.”

“No,” he agrees. “No hero would treat you the way I have.”

I shake my head, still wanting to smile. And cry. And run so someone else can fight this battle for me. “You alphas.”

Bang.

I jump.

Kade curses. “What the fuck is it with that idiot?”

Just a car backing up,I reassure myself to steady my racing heartbeat. Probably the same driver as before.

What are the chances of that happening twice?

Suspicion curls in my mind, strange and bitter.

As I stare up at Dariel, I see the same suspicion reflected in his eyes. “Kade,” he calls out, not looking away from me. “Go check out that laptop. I want to know what’s happening at the front of the house.”

“You don’t think…” Aden lets his voice trail off.

“I do,” Kade says, turning into the kitchen. He doesn’t make it.

“If you want your friend back in one piece, you’ll send my mate out to me.”

The voice comes from outside the front door. A familiar voice. The voice I hate.

Rylan.

A woman whimpers in pain, the sharp sound stretching into the house and making Dariel’s eyes harden in rage. Sam.

“Now!” Rylan barks.

No time to set an ambush. No time to prepare. This is it.

Back to my life with Rylan. Back to being chained to the wall. Back to wishing I won’t wake up the next morning. And back to hoping someone will save me but knowing no one ever will.

I try to control my breathing, to cool the panic racing like fire in my veins. The desperate need to run and never stop running nearly overwhelms me. I strangle it. That life is mine, notSam’s. I can’t run, no matter how much I want to.

“Saige?” A gentle touch on my arm. Aden.

Choking down my panic, I stiffen my spine and turn to meet his eye. “I’m ready.”

I’m really not.

Kade is moving closer. I don’t see him, but I feel his approach as if I did. “What if—”
