“You were stalking her before,” he calls out in a voice so cold, it’s like listening to a stranger.

Rylan’s lips tighten. “I don’t owe you any answers. She’s mine. Let her go.”

I feel Kade’s amusement as he tugs me back a step. “You’re going to give me one, or Saige is going nowhere.”

“I have your friend,” Rylan replies crisply.

“So you do,” Kade says, as if he doesn’t give a shit whether Sam lives or dies.

He does. I know he does.

Rylan stares at Kade, probably trying to work out if he’s being serious.

“I guess you don’t want Saige back after all.” Kade starts pulling me inside.

I’m turning to tell him to let me go when Rylan snaps. “She’s mine.”

Kade stops. “Now we both know that isn’t true. Why her?”

Silence reigns for a full two seconds.

I eye Rylan closely, thinking it’s only a matter of time before he snaps Sam’s neck, climbs into his car, and drives away again.

And then Rylan says, “When I first saw her, I thought I hadn’t killed her at all. That Alexis was still alive.”

Alexis? Please tell me he isn’t admitting to what I think he is.

“Who is Alexis?” I ask, not wanting to know, when I think I already do. “She wasn’t your…” My voice trails off as I stare at him. “Please tell me Alexis wasn’t your mate. Please tell me I wasn’t unlucky enough to be born looking like the mate you killed,” I whisper.

“Alexis is my mate,” Rylan says cooly.

“Was. I think you meanwas.” I battle to stay upright as his revelation hits me with the force of an uppercut to the chin.

It’s like someone gripped hold of my ankles and dragged me underwater. I’m struggling to draw enough air into my lungs, so maybe they did, even if I’m on dry land.

“You killed your mate.” Dariel sounds as shocked as I am. “And then you tried toreplaceher?”

“Notreplaceher,” Rylan snaps. “It’s her. She’s my mate.”

A sick ball forms in my gut. I want to retch, but if I were to start, I don’t know that I’d be able to stop. Just when I believe I’ve seen the worst of him, he reveals something new that makes me hate him even more.

“You killed your mate.” I stare at him. “You’re crazy.”

It makes sense. He was so determined not to kill me, no matter what I did. I guess after he killed his mate, the likelihood of running into another girl who looked just like Alexis would be slim to none. He demanded I dress a certain way, smell a certain way, and he had no problem whoring me out to his packmates.

Shifters are territorial, Kade said after he told us about Dariel’s mate and brother fucking on his bed. One wouldn’t willingly share their mate with another.

Unless that mate was never truly theirs to begin with.

All of it finally makes sense.

“I wondered how you could give me to the others and your wolf didn’t care,” I whisper.

No matter how I dressed or what I smelled like, his wolf would know I wasn’t his mate… Unless his wolf is the crazy one in all of this.

“Alexis is not dead. She’s right here,” Rylan bites out, nodding at me. “Give my mate back to me.”

“What did she do?” I ask.
