“Thanks, bud. You didn’t forget your toothbrush, did you?”

“Dad! They have one there for me, remember? Last time I left it here, Grandpa took me to the store and told me to keep it with them.”

“Yes. Yes, I remember now.”

My parents live between me and the center of Evergreen. One good thing is that the center of Evergreen is not only where the wealthy live but also where the bustling nightlife is. Who knows what the odds are of bumping into Nadia. It’s an insanely gorgeous evening, as it was a high seventy-eight today. We’re finally in May, and if Nadia is as fun and big-city as I imagine her to be, I can picture her strolling down the boardwalk, curious if there’s something to get into. Wherever she ends up, I hope it’s wherever I am.

It’s ten past seven in the evening when I reach my parents’ home. They live in a blue and white two-story colonial home, the same home I grew up in. My younger sister, Josephine, lives around the corner with her family. She’s a couple of years younger than me, but her kids are both in their teenage years. The youngest is thirteen, and the oldest is fifteen, both boys. Last I heard, my parents tried to gather them together for a bonfire and grilled food.

Mom is out front sipping lemonade on the wrap-around porch. I can hear her bangles jingle as she lifts her head in a slight nod at me.

“There’s my boy with his boy!” This is the typical way she greets me.

Slowly, Mom rises and shifts into full speed off the porch to embrace us.

“Holy smokes, Joaquin. Do you have a hot date planned or something?” She asks, skimming my fit.

“No…probably going to go shoot pool somewhere.”

“Well, you look very charming.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

Adam wraps his arms around Mom’s waist and kisses her hip.

“Hey, grandma! I have to tell you about Nadia!”

Weird. Nadia was over a week ago, but if I’m missing her, I’m sure Adam is too.

“Who’s that? A new classmate of yours.”

“Ha. Not even close. The young woman who had to camp at my house during the storms,” I correct.

“Oh. Yes. You told me a little about that.”

She’s right. Right after the first night, my lust and frustration for Nadia were mounting simultaneously.

“Come here, bud. Give me a tight grip. I want to see you after school on Monday.”

Dad emerges out the front door of the house. He has a bag in his hands.

“Hey, son! I have something for you.”

“Grandpa!” Adam shrieks before running toward him for an embrace.

I take the bag from my father before he lifts Adam up and spins him around from one side to the next.

I peek into the bag. There’s an array of old candles and a couple of flashlights. I smirk before I pull my father into a hug even while he holds Adam on his hip.

“Those damn storms may worsen, and you have such a big place. You’re going to need more light sources.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“Of course. Listen, how about you pick up Adam from our place this Monday. We can make you dinner?”

“Oh, that’s a great idea, Steve.” My mom adds.

“Sounds like a plan.”
