I grab a handful of cashews and peanuts from the nut dish on the coffee table. I plop them in my mouth.

“Like I said, I was generalizing if anything. What I find true…is the older you get, the less desirable it becomes to break your back to attain wealth or popularity. When I was in my twenties, my focus was tied to my goals, but now I want someone to share intimate joys with.”

My heart is racing again. Why does he have the traffic lights to my emotions? Who fucking gave him permission?

He sets his wine glass down. Shifts himself up and covers a small belch. He cracks his neck and walks toward me.

“Come here. Let me show you something.”

I extend my hand. His grip is tight, but he caresses my hand with his thumb. My body swells with goosebumps.

He takes me to the back patio. The white screen door moans as it opens. It closes slowly as I tilt toward the strawberry and pretty blue sunset. An abundance of green trees stands before me. Their leaves sway effortlessly, freely.

I feel Joaquin’s warmth behind me. The heat from his chest tickles my upper back while he bends over to place his firm chin on the crevice between my neck and shoulder.

He whispers, “Look in the middle.”

His right-hand wraps around my waist as he extends his left arm out. He points between two large white oak trees. One of the trees appears to have a branch so wide and long that it curls toward the other tree, almost in a yearning embrace.

“If you pay attention to the big hugger. The larger white oak tree. Do you see?”

I nod.

“His arm, or branch, is filled with green leaves.”

“Yes, it’s hairy.” I laugh.

“Now, look closely at the array of hanging leaves.”

I do. And, if I’m not fooling myself, every leaf that dances on this large branch has a unique shade of green.

“From tea green to sage, to olive and juniper and seaweed. There are too many greens that big tree has to offer. True greens. I counted about thirty different shades of green one evening. And, nowhere I’ve ever been in Evergreen has provided me with seeing as much green as this spot does. I’ve seen more green at once in my own backyard than I’ve seen anywhere else.”

He’s right. Not even my grandmother’s carefully curated lawns look this stunning. The way the sun is setting brings a dewiness to the green leaves. Iridescent and pleasant, the misty touch brings an insatiable romance to the tip of my tongue.

“That is gorgeous! Do you think my phone can capture it?”

“Why do that when it’s right here. Right before you?”

I sigh, “You’re right.”

Seems like he’s often right. And he’s right to peck at my neck as I enjoy the stunning view. His mouth is damp and eager as he squeezes my waist with a deep lure that I feel in my pelvic area.

I gasp. My eyes sway between opening and closing. I hold picturesque moments of the rainbow array of greens that linger behind my closed eyelids as if I never shut them.

Taking a break from delivering mouthfuls of shrills my way, Joaquin declares, “I can give you every shade of green you could ever want.”

My knees buckle as my mouth peers open, releasing a tense little moan.

“I can give you the kind of security you’ve never considered.”

Why is he continuing to do this? It’s hotter than I’d imagine. It’s more romantic than I ever considered. His nibbles are fuller and heavier, and the organ between his legs stabs at my lower back in sheer hunger.

“Don’t overlook a place like Evergreen. Evergreen lasts forever.”

I’m not sure if he means to use the words he’s choosing or if the spirit of this beautiful day is doing the talking.

What I do know is he’s cupping my breasts with both hands. His eyes are open as he sensually strokes them to see if they are ripe. They are more than ready for his hands, breath, and mouth.
