Dad is preaching to the choir. These are all real fears of mine. I prefer not to revisit all the infinite possibilities that will bring sorrow my way. I’d rather put my intentions on believing Nadia wants this life for me and the baby and my precious Adam.

The backdoor opens, and Mom steps in with her Rosé bottle.

“If I would’ve known you two weren’t drinking. I would’ve sat this night out myself.” Mom laughs, but her laughter quickly fades away as she reads the gloom in my eyes.

“Did you tell him?” Mom looks at Dad. Dad gives Mom a scornful look as if she said something she wasn’t supposed to.

So, there is a secret. I’m not an idiot, and since they both know that about me, they stumble over which one to speak.

“Listen —” Mom is cut off.

“No. No. No, I will tell Joaquin when I think it is time. There is no need to talk any further.” Dad persists, and Dad wins as Nadia and Adam also step inside.

“Felt a couple of drizzles out there.” Nadia is blinded by the energy in here. She’s been having a great time which has made me very happy.

I need her in a good place. She’s carrying our baby, and her happiness matters right now. My Dad is a man of his word, and I expect him to tell me whatever he has to say to me sooner than later. Especially since he claims my happiness is important to him. If that is true, I know in my heart the truth, whatever it is, will come out.

Chapter 17

Nadia

“Nadia!Canyouhearme?”

I’ve been in Evergreen for over two months and feel a little dysfunctional with technology. I struggle with my rental Jeep’s Bluetooth as my agent gets agitated.

“Hello! Simone? Can you hear me?”

“I’m here!” Her tone is like fingernails against a chalkboard. Truly, irritating.

I take a few breaths and reach for the ice water Joaquin makes me carry around. He’s such a caretaker that it makes my knees knock when he does stuff like this. I take a couple of gulps as I feel my agent’s impatience nip at me through the speaker’s waves.

“You may want to pull over.”

My heart begins to race as I do not know what this pressure is about. I just left Joaquin’s shop. That’s where I compile all my notes and have a bit of solace paired with eye candy to get some work done. It’s genuinely a great balance. How cool is it to research while my future child’s father runs his shop right in front of me? Sounds like a Hallmark movie sexy if you ask me. But wait…Simone clearly has important news for me. I ought to listen.

I pull over to the side of the road to solely focus. I put the Jeep in ‘Park.’

“Yes. I’m all ears!”

“First thing first, how’s the memoir going?”

“Great! I have more than I thought I would. I sent you a new outline.”

“Saw it. Go for it! I think it looks great. I knew this project would be forever turning and developing. That’s to be expected with this kind of book. But, are you ready to leave that townor what?” I can’t deny there’s this elitism to her question that makes my stomach churn. I won’t offend her, but I don’t want to answer her either.

“It’s not that bad.”

“Of course. Your grandmother probably has you eating out of someone’s hands.”

“Ew. Not even.”

“Ya, I was kidding. Kind of. Listen…there is something pretty major I have to tell you.”

My heart rate picks up, and my seatbelt feels tighter around me than ever before.

“What’s that?”

“You know the Khans in Dubai?”
